Develop Health Raises $14.3 Million Series A to Streamline Medication Access with Generative AI

TLDR: Develop Health has successfully secured $14.3 million in Series A funding, bringing its total funding to $17.6 million. The company aims to revolutionize medication access by automating the prior authorization process using a generative AI-native platform. This innovation is designed to significantly reduce administrative burdens for healthcare providers and improve patient access to necessary treatments.

Develop Health, a pioneering healthcare technology company, has announced the successful closure of a $14.3 million Series A funding round. This significant investment was led by Wing Venture Capital, with additional participation from Afore Capital, J Ventures, and South Park Commons. The latest funding round elevates the company’s total capital raised to an impressive $17.6 million, underscoring investor confidence in its mission to tackle critical bottlenecks in healthcare administration.

The core focus of Develop Health is to automate and streamline the often-cumbersome process of prior authorization and medication access. The company has engineered what it describes as the first medication access platform built entirely around generative AI. Unlike traditional, fragmented automation solutions, Develop Health’s platform leverages over a dozen specialized large language model pipelines. These sophisticated AI models are designed to emulate the complex reasoning and follow-up tasks typically handled by human administrative staff.

The platform seamlessly integrates with existing electronic health records (EHRs), embedding itself into provider workflows without disrupting the operational rhythm of care teams. From the moment a prescription is issued, the system automatically verifies insurance coverage in real-time, generates the necessary prior authorization documentation, submits it through the appropriate channels, and continuously tracks its progress until approval. All status updates and structured data are then automatically fed back into the EHR.

This innovative approach promises substantial improvements in efficiency and patient outcomes. By minimizing the back-and-forth communication between providers and payers, Develop Health claims to reduce form completion time by more than 80% and significantly boost approval rates. What previously involved weeks of manual processes, including faxes, phone calls, and tracking, is now compressed into minutes of fully automated processing.

Develop Health was co-founded by Mel van Londen and Benjamin Easton, who conceived the company out of personal frustrations with the inefficiencies inherent in payer-provider communications. Their prior experiences at Canvas Medical and Rupa Health highlighted the detrimental impact of administrative delays, which often impede patient access to vital treatments, lead to revenue losses for providers, and ultimately worsen health outcomes. The company is poised to address this hidden healthcare bottleneck, aiming to make medication access more efficient and equitable.
