TLDR: Databricks has launched a significant program aimed at upskilling 100,000 individuals in artificial intelligence and data competencies throughout the UK and Ireland. This initiative is part of a broader $100 million global investment by the company to address the critical talent shortage in the rapidly evolving fields of data science, engineering, and machine learning.
Databricks, a leading data and AI company, has announced a substantial new scheme to train 100,000 people in essential AI and data skills across the United Kingdom and Ireland. This localized effort, revealed on October 16, 2025, is a key component of Databricks’ previously announced $100 million global investment in data and AI education, first detailed in June 2025.
The comprehensive skills development program will focus on high-demand areas including generative AI, data engineering, machine learning, and analytics. The initiative aims to equip a diverse range of individuals—from students and hobbyists to aspiring professionals and those within academic institutions—with the practical expertise needed to thrive in the data-driven economy.
This strategic move by Databricks directly confronts the pervasive ‘skills gap’ that continues to challenge industries worldwide. According to data from the World Economic Forum, a staggering eight out of ten business leaders anticipate that artificial intelligence will fundamentally reshape their organizations by 2030. An IBM study further highlights this challenge, indicating that nearly 50% of AI-related roles remain unfilled due to a lack of qualified talent. McKinsey also estimates that as many as 375 million workers globally will need to adapt their roles to meet evolving company needs.
Ali Ghodsi, Co-founder and CEO of Databricks, emphasized the urgency of this investment, stating, “Everyone we speak to is constrained by the same problem: not enough people with the right data and AI skills. With the right investment and the right tools, we will see more AI innovation in this next generation than all previous generations combined. That’s why we’re making a long-term bet on education — not just to close the talent gap, but because it’s fundamental to our mission of democratizing data and AI.”
To facilitate this widespread training, Databricks is leveraging its ‘Free Edition,’ which provides complimentary access to the full capabilities of the Databricks Data Intelligence Platform. This platform mirrors the industry-standard tools and workflows used by leading companies, offering hands-on experience with technologies like Apache Spark, Delta Lake, and MLflow. The company is also expanding its University Alliance Program, which already supports over 1,200 institutions globally, reaching more than 100,000 students worldwide.

Feedback from existing Databricks training programs has been overwhelmingly positive. A recent survey of hundreds of leaders revealed that over 70% reported significant improvements in organizational efficiency, innovation, and the ability to solve new business problems as a direct result of Databricks training. The new courses also offer cloud-specific pathways, enabling practitioners to learn how to architect and manage Databricks workloads across major cloud providers such as AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud Platform.
