TLDR: Kenyan tech firm Craft Silicon has launched ‘Small Talk,’ a generative AI chatbot designed to transform banking interactions in Africa. Unveiled at the 2025 SACCO Summit in Nairobi, this voice-first AI integrates directly with core banking systems and supports both English and local languages, aiming to make financial services more accessible and intuitive.
NAIROBI, Kenya – Craft Silicon, a leading Kenyan technology company, has introduced a groundbreaking generative artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot named ‘Small Talk,’ poised to revolutionize the financial services sector across Africa. The innovative solution, unveiled by Group CEO Kamal Budhabhatti at the 2025 SACCO Summit in Nairobi, emphasizes a distinct voice-first approach to human-technology interaction.
‘Small Talk’ is designed to integrate seamlessly with existing banking core systems, allowing users to interact with their financial institutions through natural voice commands in both English and various local languages. This capability positions it as a direct competitor to global AI models such as ChatGPT, Elon Musk’s Grok, and Meta’s Llama, while offering a uniquely localized solution tailored for the African market.
During the SACCO Summit, an event that convened over 700 C-suite managers from East Africa to discuss digital transformation, Budhabhatti highlighted the strategic importance of voice interaction. ‘Our forecast indicates future interaction with technology is going to be through voice,’ he stated. He further explained that this voice-centric design aims to reduce the reliance on traditional text-based interfaces and significantly lower the costs associated with user training, a common barrier to the adoption of new digital technologies.
The AI chatbot is currently undergoing a pilot phase with several financial institutions. Once fully deployed, ‘Small Talk’ will enable users to verbally inquire about their account balances, receive personalized savings tips, and obtain real-time support for various financial queries directly through their mobile banking applications. Its ability to comprehend local languages and connect in real-time to the core banking infrastructure is a pivotal feature, promising to enhance financial inclusion, especially in regions with limited literacy or digital familiarity.
