TLDR: A recent report by Decagon reveals that a significant 70% of consumers are prepared to pay more for products from brands offering exceptional customer support. The study, which surveyed over 2,000 U.S. adults, also underscores the growing acceptance and preference for AI-powered customer service, particularly among younger demographics, who view AI agents as modern, efficient, and even trustworthy for personal interactions.
SAN FRANCISCO – A new 2025 survey from Decagon, a prominent provider of conversational AI agents, indicates a strong consumer demand for high-quality customer support, with 70% of consumers expressing a willingness to pay a premium for brands that deliver exceptional service. The report, titled ‘AI and the Next Generation of Customer Experiences,’ surveyed 2,077 U.S. adults and sheds light on evolving consumer expectations and the increasing role of artificial intelligence in meeting them.
The findings emphasize the critical importance of customer experience in maintaining brand loyalty. A striking 58% of consumers stated that a single negative interaction would deter them from purchasing from a brand again. Furthermore, the frustration with poor service is so profound that 31% of Americans would rather visit the dentist than endure exceptionally frustrating customer support.
The study also highlights a significant generational shift in attitudes towards customer service and AI. Adults aged 18-44 consistently reported lower satisfaction with customer interactions across various industries compared to those aged 45 and older. This younger demographic, however, shows a remarkable openness to AI-led solutions.
Key insights into the younger consumer group (18-44) include:
AI Preference: 86% would prefer AI over a human agent if it guaranteed faster, more accurate, and more readily available support.
Perception of Modernity: 56% of all consumers agree that brands utilizing AI agents for customer support are perceived as more modern and innovative.
Trust and Comfort: A surprising 55% of younger adults feel more comfortable sharing personal details with AI than with some of their friends.
Emotional Connection: 53% believe AI chatbots can listen better than a spouse or partner, and those aged 18-44 are twice as likely as older consumers to believe AI agents can demonstrate emotional intelligence in customer support interactions.

The report posits that brands must adapt to these changing preferences, especially among younger consumers who are actively embracing AI for its efficiency, accuracy, and even its perceived ability to foster trust and understanding.
