Columbia University’s Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Science (Columbia Engineering) is set to host its impactful Climate Week 2025 from September 22 to 26, 2025. This annual event, a key part of Climate Week NYC, will convene leading researchers, industry experts, and policymakers to explore and develop innovative solutions for the planet’s most pressing environmental challenges. The week-long program will feature a diverse array of discussions, panels, and initiatives, with a significant focus on the intersection of technology and sustainability, including the pivotal role of Artificial Intelligence.
The events will take place across various Columbia University venues, including the Davis Auditorium, Carleton Commons, Columbia Engineering Innovation Hub (Tang Family Hall), Columbia Business School (Geffen Hall), Jerome L. Greene Science Center, and International House. The initiative is a collaborative effort, co-hosted by Columbia Engineering, Columbia Business School, and the Columbia Climate School, underscoring a multidisciplinary approach to climate action.
One of the most anticipated events is the ‘GenAI for Climate Science: A LEAP NSF Science and Technology Center-hosted Panel Discussion’ scheduled for Friday, September 26. This session will delve into how Generative AI (GenAI) is accelerating progress in climate science, offering new possibilities for emulation, downscaling, prediction, and decision support amidst growing demands for large-scale data and complex modeling in climate research. This highlights the direct relevance of AI in addressing climate challenges.
The week kicks off on Monday, September 22, with a Tech CEO Lecture/Fireside Chat featuring Alexander Sarrigeorgiou, CEO of Eurolife FFH. The discussion, titled ‘Navigating Climate Challenges: Resilience through Insurance, Markets and Public Policy,’ will explore how regulatory frameworks, market incentives, and public policy can transform the insurance industry into a proactive force for climate adaptation, particularly as climate disasters intensify across Europe. This day will also see the launch of the Gotham Foundry, a new sustainable materials innovation hub aimed at accelerating regenerative and biodegradable materials, and a session on ‘Data and Partnerships for Global Clean Air and Climate.’
Mid-week, on Wednesday, September 24, the CEEC Fall Symposium will focus on ‘Climate Solutions for Sustainable Energy, Chemicals, and Materials.’ Another key event on this day will be ‘The Race to Fusion Energy: International Cooperation and Competition,’ exploring global efforts and investments in fusion technology.
Thursday, September 25, will feature the 6th annual ‘Rethinking Water 2025’ conference, hosted by Sciens Water in collaboration with Columbia University’s Water Center. This conference will address critical water challenges in the United States, focusing on aging infrastructure and evolving regulations.
