TLDR: The Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) and the Association of International Certified Professional Accountants (AICPA) have unveiled a significant upgrade to the CGMA Professional Qualification syllabus, set to launch in 2026. This update emphasizes finance business partnering, critical thinking, and the integration of emerging technologies like generative AI and sustainability, aiming to equip finance professionals for the evolving global economy.
The landscape of global finance is undergoing a rapid transformation, driven by technological advancements and shifting business demands. In response, the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) and the Association of International Certified Professional Accountants (AICPA) have announced a comprehensive upgrade to the CGMA Professional Qualification syllabus, slated for implementation in 2026. This strategic enhancement is designed to future-proof finance professionals, ensuring they possess the skills necessary to thrive as high-impact business partners in an increasingly complex world.
The updated syllabus places a sharper focus on several key areas, including advanced finance business partnering, critical thinking, and strategic problem-solving. It also significantly expands its coverage to encompass sustainability topics, such as green finance, environmental costing, and disclosures under IFRS S1/S2, alongside crucial financial technologies, notably generative AI. This integration reflects insights from the AICPA & CIMA’s ‘Future of Finance 2.0’ research and the World Economic Forum’s ‘Future of Jobs Report 2025’, both of which underscore the critical importance of blending technological expertise with human insight for career success in the knowledge economy.
Stephen Flatman, Vice-President of Education and Professional Qualifications, Management Accounting at the Association of International Certified Professional Accountants, highlighted the practical application of the new curriculum. “With a focus on finance role simulations embedded in our Case Study exams, the CGMA Professional Qualification allows finance professionals to quickly develop and apply cognitive, digital, and technical skills needed as finance business partners,” Flatman stated. He further added, “Our unique problem-solving educational approach helps them provide expert advice, support decision-making, and create value for organisations.”
Andrew Harding, FCMA, CGMA, Chief Executive of Management Accounting at the Association of International Certified Professional Accountants, emphasized how this upgrade distinguishes the CGMA qualification. He noted that the update “sets it apart from traditional accounting and finance education, which still focuses heavily on preparing information, controls, and compliance — tasks increasingly automated by technology.” Barry Payne, External Relations – Business Engagement and Growth director at AICPA and CIMA, echoed this sentiment, stating, “This syllabus update represents a major shift from traditional accounting education, which has long focused on information preparation, controls, and compliance—areas now increasingly automated by technology.”
The transition to the new syllabus will be phased. Objective Tests (OTs) started by the end of September 2025 must be completed by December 2025 under the current syllabus. All subjects commenced from January 2026 onwards will follow the new curriculum. For Case Study Exams, the last sitting for the current syllabus is February 2026, with exams from May 2026 based on the updated content. Importantly, these changes will not affect students preparing for CGMA examinations in 2025, ensuring a seamless progression for current candidates.

To facilitate this transition, AICPA and CIMA are committed to providing extensive support. Over 50 hours of free study resources and a comprehensive study pack, including new Case Study and Objective Test materials, will be released by October 2025. This continuous improvement approach, moving away from a traditional five-year overhaul cycle, allows the qualification to rapidly adapt to the evolving demands of the finance profession, ensuring that CGMA-qualified professionals are well-equipped to drive value and innovation in their organizations.
