Chinese Tech Giants Intensify AI Agent Development Following Competitor’s Market Exit

TLDR: Tencent and ByteDance are significantly ramping up their investment and development in AI agents, capitalizing on the void left by Manus AI’s departure from the Chinese market due to geopolitical tensions. Both companies showcased their advancements at the World Artificial Intelligence Conference (WAIC) in Shanghai, highlighting a strategic shift towards practical AI applications.

Chinese technology behemoths Tencent Holdings and ByteDance are aggressively expanding their focus on artificial intelligence (AI) agents, seizing a strategic opportunity created by the exit of rival Manus AI from the competitive Chinese market. Manus AI, developed by Butterfly Effect, reportedly relocated overseas to Singapore following scrutiny from US authorities after securing funding from a US venture capital firm, Benchmark. This departure has inadvertently accelerated the domestic AI agent market in China, with established players like Tencent and ByteDance rushing to fill the gap.

At the recent World Artificial Intelligence Conference (WAIC) held in Shanghai, Tencent’s cloud computing unit unveiled a comprehensive suite of a dozen AI agents. These software solutions are designed to autonomously complete tasks for both business users and consumers. Tencent demonstrated the capabilities of its online marketing agent, which can automate entire workflows, from profiling target consumers and selecting suitable products to creating marketing materials and evaluating campaign performance. The company also highlighted its assistive coding agents, such as CodeBuddy IDE, which is akin to ByteDance’s Trae and Baidu’s Comate, aiming to streamline software development.

Wu Yunsheng, Vice-President of Tencent Cloud, emphasized the critical role of AI agents in unlocking the value of AI models. Speaking to Chinese media outlet 36Kr at WAIC, Wu stated, ‘Agents can amplify the value of large language models and represent an an important business model for driving adoption.‘ Tencent Cloud has also enhanced its business-oriented Agent Development Platform and consumer-facing Yuanqi platform, enabling third-party developers to build their own AI agents without requiring extensive coding, thereby lowering the barrier to entry and accelerating AI adoption.

ByteDance, another key player, has also made significant strides in the AI agent space. Last week, the company open-sourced its agent development platform, Coze Studio, which it claims has already assisted tens of thousands of businesses and millions of developers in creating AI agents. This move underscores a broader strategic shift within China’s AI industry, moving from the development of foundational models to the creation of practical, problem-solving AI applications.
