CGI Pioneers Agentic AI for Enhanced Business Transformation and Workforce Empowerment

TLDR: CGI is at the forefront of integrating Agentic AI into business operations, moving beyond traditional automation to empower systems with greater autonomy and decision-making capabilities. This strategic shift, led by Russell Goodenough, Head of AI for UK and Australia, is driving significant digital transformation across various sectors, focusing on practical applications, ethical considerations, and human-centered approaches to enhance efficiency and foster innovation.

CGI, a leading Canadian multinational information technology consulting and software development company, is spearheading the adoption of Agentic AI, fundamentally transforming business operations and empowering its workforce. This strategic initiative is detailed by Russell Goodenough, CGI’s Head of AI for the UK and Australia, who emphasizes the ethical and human-centered approach to AI implementation.

Agentic AI represents a significant leap beyond traditional automation, enabling systems to act with greater autonomy. Unlike conventional automation that follows pre-determined rules, Agentic AI systems can “make informed decisions and manage tasks on their own, rather than simply executing pre-determined code.” By combining contextual awareness, machine learning, and dynamic decision-making, these AI agents can adapt actions in real-time, moving beyond rigid, pre-determined workflows. This capability allows computers to reason, collaborate, and drive business operations, with humans orchestrating the software.

Under Goodenough’s leadership, CGI has already demonstrated the value of AI tools both internally and for its diverse client base. The company’s focus is on practical applications, identifying specific operational challenges where Agentic AI can deliver measurable outcomes while adhering to international data protection and AI governance frameworks. Goodenough states, “The technology industry is fascinating, it’s constantly evolving and changing – generative and agentic AI are clear examples of that. Applying these technologies to help people and society is a passion of mine and I’m keen to share it.”

One key aspect of CGI’s strategy is workforce empowerment. By placing AI tools directly into employees’ hands and providing comprehensive training, CGI enables individuals to effectively integrate AI into their daily work. This approach allows employees to focus on higher-value, meaningful tasks, while AI handles routine operations. Notably, CGI has observed strong adoption within its neurodivergent community, where AI can assist with tasks that might otherwise cause anxiety, such as public speaking.

The impact of Agentic AI extends to significant efficiency gains. While traditional rule-based automation might achieve around 40% automation, the integration of cognitive and Agentic AI can push this envelope up to 70% or even 80%. This is particularly evident in areas like autonomous procurement systems handling millions in transactions and perpetual KYC (Know Your Customer) processes in banking, leading to dramatic reductions in process turnaround times.

CGI’s approach to Agentic AI is not about replacing humans but rather fostering a human-agent partnership. As OpenAI CEO Sam Altman noted at the 2024 World Economic Forum, the goal is to “let society and the technology co-evolve, and sort of step-by-step with a very tight feedback loop and course correction, [to] build these systems that deliver tremendous value while meeting safety requirements.” CGI is committed to building resilient and adaptable organizational ecosystems by designing Agentic ecosystems with built-in guardrails, transparency, and feedback loops.

The global AI agents market is projected to grow significantly, from USD 7.84 billion in 2025 to an anticipated USD 52 billion by 2030, reflecting a broader expansion of the artificial intelligence sector, which is forecasted to approach USD 1.5 trillion by 2030. This growth underscores the increasing recognition of Agentic AI’s potential to transform global business services into powerful growth engines, moving beyond mere cost-cutting centers to strategic contributors.
