TLDR: Cerence AI has announced a new mobile work AI agent that seamlessly integrates Microsoft 365 Copilot into vehicles. This voice-first solution, running on Cerence xUI™ platform, aims to enable safer and smarter productivity for professionals on the go by minimizing distracted driving and providing secure access to Microsoft 365 services like Teams, Outlook, and OneNote. The collaboration with Microsoft also includes Microsoft Intune integration for enterprise-grade security and policy enforcement within the car.
MUNICH and BURLINGTON, Mass. – September 8, 2025 – Cerence Inc. (NASDAQ: CRNC), a global leader in conversational AI-powered user experiences, today unveiled a groundbreaking mobile work AI agent developed in close collaboration with Microsoft. This innovative agent is designed to integrate Microsoft 365 Copilot directly into cars, offering a voice-first experience that promises to enable safer and smarter productivity for professionals on the go.
The new AI agent, built upon Cerence’s proprietary agentic AI assistant platform, Cerence xUI™, will provide hands-free access to essential Microsoft 365 services, including Copilot, Teams, Outlook, and OneNote. The core objective is to address the growing trend of mobile work and the associated risks of distracted driving. The system is engineered with context-aware functionality, adapting its operations based on whether the user is parked, actively driving, or riding in an autonomous vehicle, thereby minimizing potential distractions.
Christian Mentz, Cerence AI Chief Revenue Officer, highlighted the critical need for such technology: “We’ve all been there – you’re driving, and your phone is dinging as new emails and chats come in. You very quickly start to feel like you’re falling behind. For most people, unfortunately, the instinct is to then check their phone while driving. With our new mobile work AI agent and its integration with Microsoft 365 Copilot services, we will help to minimize this impulse through a natural, voice-first experience that doesn’t compromise safety or security. The focus isn’t maximizing productivity; it’s recognizing the need for technology that supports smarter, safer work in a world that is increasingly mobile.”
The collaboration between Cerence AI and Microsoft dates back to early 2024, when they began delivering automotive-grade implementations to millions of vehicles, enabling users to access ChatGPT through Microsoft Azure OpenAI in AI Foundry Models. This partnership has already benefited numerous automotive OEMs, including Renault, Volkswagen, Audi, Cupra, Seat, and Skoda, by combining Cerence AI’s deep vertical expertise with Microsoft’s robust cloud and AI capabilities.
Further enhancing its automotive AI offerings, Cerence AI has also developed and optimized CaLLM™ Edge, an automotive-grade, embedded small language model (SLM). This development leverages Microsoft’s Phi-3 family of SLMs and Cerence’s extensive automotive dataset to create highly specialized AI capable of handling a diverse range of in-car use cases.
The user experience is designed for seamless interaction. Drivers will be able to utilize voice commands to draft messages, construct meeting agendas, and transform ideas captured in OneNote into comprehensive documents. The AI agent will also offer proactive features such as morning debriefs, daily overviews through natural conversation, and intelligent calendar management, drawing context from both Microsoft 365 Copilot services and the vehicle’s operational status. Over time, the agent will learn individual preferences, allowing users to pause conversations, for instance, if they prefer silence during specific parts of their journey.
From an enterprise perspective, the integration with Microsoft Intune is a significant advantage. This feature transforms the vehicle into a managed, trusted device, ensuring compliant and secure access to corporate Microsoft 365 tools and their advanced AI capabilities, a crucial step for corporate IT departments that traditionally view vehicles as unsecured endpoints.
For automakers, this in-vehicle Microsoft 365 Copilot experience represents a premium, loyalty-building differentiator. Cerence xUI’s flexible platform ensures that the agent can scale across a wide array of vehicle segments and OEM architectures, from luxury flagships to mass-market models, allowing any automaker to offer a branded Microsoft 365 Copilot experience.
Dayan Rodriguez, Microsoft Corporate Vice President, Global Manufacturing and Mobility, commented on the partnership: “Our collaboration with Cerence AI will bring Microsoft 365 Copilot into the car, enabling drivers to stay connected without compromising safety or compliance. With secure, voice-first access to trusted tools, we’re helping people manage their day more effectively—whether it’s staying informed, coordinating schedules, or making quick decisions on the go. It’s not about doing more work—it’s about optimizing for busy lives in a safe, seamless way.”
