TLDR: Commonwealth Bank of Australia (CBA) has implemented an AI-driven accelerator, developed in collaboration with AWS, to automate and streamline the review process for its cloud-based applications. This initiative aims to bolster the resiliency, security, and efficiency of its cloud workloads by aligning them with AWS Well-Architected Framework best practices, supporting large-scale cloud migration and ongoing optimization.
Commonwealth Bank of Australia (CBA) is advancing its cloud strategy through the deployment of a sophisticated AI-driven accelerator, a generative AI tool developed in partnership with Amazon Web Services (AWS). This innovative solution is designed to significantly enhance the bank’s ability to prepare and optimize its applications for the cloud by automating and streamlining regular reviews of cloud-based workloads. The initiative is a critical component of CBA’s broader effort to ensure the resiliency, security, and efficiency of its extensive cloud infrastructure.
The accelerator functions by comparing CBA’s cloud deployments against the rigorous principles of the AWS Well-Architected Framework. This framework is a cornerstone for cloud architects, guiding the optimization of applications and workloads consuming AWS resources across six key pillars: operational excellence, security, reliability, performance efficiency, cost optimization, and sustainability. While traditionally associated with the design and build phases, CBA is leveraging this AI tool to conduct reviews at regular intervals, fostering continuous optimization and evolution of its applications.
Yuri Belenky, CBA’s General Manager of Cloud Enablement, highlighted the strategic importance of this approach at a recent re:Invent conference. Belenky stated that the Well-Architected Framework has been instrumental in enabling the bank to execute a cloud migration at scale. He further elaborated on the nuanced nature of cloud migration, noting, ‘When you’re doing cloud migration, not all applications are the same. Some of them need to undergo deep technical modernisation, [others] just light touch to make it run on cloud.’ This underscores the need for a flexible and intelligent review process that the AI accelerator provides.

AWS has collaborated closely with CBA, tailoring several tools and features in response to the bank’s feedback and experiences with these reviews. These customizations include a consolidated reporting capability that aggregates insights from various Well-Architected reviews across the bank, the ability to pre-fill review templates with standard answers, and the flexibility to customize questions based on how an application was made cloud-ready. This bespoke development ensures the accelerator is highly effective in addressing CBA’s specific operational requirements and diverse application portfolio.
