C3.ai’s Q1 2025 Performance: Revenue Miss Amidst Strategic AI Investments and Sales Restructuring

TLDR: C3.ai reported preliminary Q1 2025 revenues of $70.2-$70.4 million, falling short of guidance and marking a 19% year-over-year decline. CEO Tom Siebel called the results ‘completely unacceptable,’ attributing them to sales reorganization disruptions and personal health issues. Despite the revenue miss and significant operating losses, the company highlighted strong cash reserves and strategic advancements in generative AI, with revenue doubling in fiscal 2025. C3.ai also completed a major sales and services restructuring and secured key federal contracts, signaling a long-term focus on enterprise AI market capture.

C3.ai, a prominent player in enterprise AI applications, has released its preliminary financial results for the first quarter of fiscal year 2025, ending July 31, 2025, revealing a mixed performance of challenges and strategic advancements. The company reported preliminary total revenue in the range of $70.2 million to $70.4 million. This figure significantly missed the company’s own guidance of $100 million to $109 million and represents a 19% year-over-year decline.

CEO Tom Siebel did not mince words regarding the performance, stating the results were ‘completely unacceptable.’ He attributed the shortfall primarily to disruptions caused by a comprehensive sales reorganization and his personal health issues. Despite the revenue miss, C3.ai demonstrated financial resilience, reporting robust cash reserves of $711.9 million as of July 31, 2025.

The quarter also saw substantial GAAP operating losses, estimated between $124.7 million and $124.9 million, with non-GAAP operating losses ranging from $57.7 million to $57.9 million. These figures underscore ongoing profitability challenges, though adjusted gross margins improved to 70% in fiscal 2025, indicating some operational efficiency gains. The company projects free cash flow to turn positive by the fourth quarter of fiscal year 2026, contingent on the stabilization of operations following the sales reorganization and leadership changes.

Strategically, C3.ai is heavily investing in the burgeoning enterprise AI market. The company reported that its generative AI revenue doubled in fiscal year 2025, driven by 66 deployments across 16 industries. A notable success includes generating $33 million in savings for the USC Shoah Foundation through generative AI applications. Furthermore, C3.ai is expanding its market reach through significant federal contracts, including the $450 million U.S. Air Force PANDA platform, and strengthening partnerships with major cloud providers like Microsoft and AWS, particularly leveraging AWS’s Secret Region for high-stakes government contracts.

In response to the Q1 performance and to position for future growth, C3.ai completed a significant restructuring of its global sales and services organization during the quarter. Key leadership appointments include Rob Schilling as EVP and Chief Commercial Officer (effective June 16, 2025), John Kitchingman as GM, EMEA (effective June 30), Jeff Cosseboom leading North America East Sales, and Lars Farnstrom overseeing Nordics operations. Alex Amato was promoted to Group VP of Customer Services to unify professional and customer service delivery. CEO Siebel confirmed his health has significantly improved, and he is now fully engaged, believing these strategic moves, combined with a strong product suite and high customer satisfaction, will set the stage for accelerated growth.

The company’s generative AI revenue surged over 100% year-over-year in 2025, driven by innovations like omni-modal parsing and dynamic planning agents, which could attract acquirers seeking to fast-track their AI ambitions, particularly in defense and healthcare sectors.
