Businesses Lag in Adopting Robust Identity Security, SailPoint Report Reveals

TLDR: A new report from SailPoint, a leading enterprise identity security firm, indicates that a significant number of businesses are slow to adopt comprehensive identity security measures. The ‘Horizons of Identity Security’ report, based on a survey of 350 executives, found that 41% of organizations are just starting to improve their identity security, with only 10% investing in advanced solutions. Key factors contributing to this delay include mergers and acquisitions, divestitures, and a shortage of AI talent. The report underscores the critical role of identity security in combating cyber threats and notes a growing trend in the adoption of AI-powered identity solutions among more mature organizations.

SailPoint, a prominent enterprise identity security firm, has released its 3rd annual research report, ‘The Horizons of Identity Security,’ shedding light on the challenges and advancements within the field. The findings, presented during a media event on July 16 in Makati City, reveal a concerning trend: many businesses are lagging in the adoption of robust identity security measures.

The report, compiled from responses of 350 executive-level individuals across major finance and technology firms globally, indicates that a substantial 41% of organizations are merely at the initial stages of enhancing their identity security. Furthermore, a mere 10% are actively investing in more sophisticated security solutions, highlighting a significant gap in proactive cybersecurity strategies.

Several factors are contributing to this slow adoption. Among the primary reasons cited are the complexities introduced by mergers and acquisitions, divestitures, and a notable scarcity of AI talent within organizations. These challenges impede the seamless integration and implementation of advanced identity security frameworks.

Despite the slow adoption, the report strongly emphasizes the critical importance of identity security in mitigating escalating cyber threats. It underscores that identity security has evolved from a purely technical concern into a strategic business priority, directly impacting overall business performance, risk reduction, and workforce productivity.

Interestingly, the report also points to a positive trend among more mature organizations: an approximate two-fold rise in the adoption of AI-powered identity solutions. This shift facilitates scalable solutions and better alignment with emerging technologies, including Generative AI (GenAI). SailPoint itself is at the forefront of this integration, with its platform processing over 1.3 million AI-powered access decisions each quarter for its enterprise clients. The company’s AI-powered Atlas architecture leverages machine learning to monitor identity-resource combinations, applying context-aware rules for access control, anomaly detection, identity pattern recognition, and behavior analysis. This advanced approach is crucial, as the sheer scale of access combinations in large organizations makes manual governance unsustainable.

The firm has also introduced the Five Horizons Identity Maturity Model, a framework that guides organizations from ad hoc, manual processes (Horizon 1) to fully integrated, AI-driven systems (Horizon 5), underscoring AI’s role as a core element of modern identity security. Nearly half of Fortune 500 companies and about a quarter of the Forbes Global 2000, particularly in regulated industries like telecom and banking, rely on SailPoint to address their identity security needs with its innovative, unified, AI-powered platform.
