Business Imperatives Drive Agentic AI Adoption in India’s Telecom Sector

TLDR: India’s telecom sector is rapidly embracing agentic AI, moving beyond traditional automation to autonomous systems. A recent KPMG report highlights that 97% of telcos are adopting or assessing AI, with 49% already integrating it into daily operations. India’s telecommunications sector is undergoing a significant transformation, with business decisions serving as the primary catalyst for the widespread deployment of agentic Artificial Intelligence (AI). This strategic shift, which moves beyond conventional automation to autonomous, goal-driven AI systems, is poised to redefine network operations, customer engagement, and overall business outcomes.

A comprehensive report by KPMG in India, titled ‘From Automation to Autonomy: Reimagining Telecom with Agentic AI,’ was unveiled by Shri Jyotiraditya M Scindia, the Minister of Communications, at the India Mobile Congress 2025. The report underscores India’s unique position to lead in large-scale agentic AI adoption, attributed to its immense scale, rich data ecosystems, and supportive policy environment.

Key findings from the KPMG report reveal that an overwhelming 97% of Indian telecom operators are either adopting or actively assessing AI technologies, with nearly half (49%) having already embedded AI into their daily operations. This marks a notable increase from 41% in the previous year, indicating a rapid acceleration in AI integration. Furthermore, half of the telcos have successfully implemented their first generative AI (GenAI) use cases.

Agentic AI distinguishes itself from generative AI by acting autonomously to manage critical functions such as self-healing networks, predictive churn management, and hyper-personalized customer engagement. This autonomy is crucial for India’s complex telecom environment, which serves over 1.1 billion wireless connections and is witnessing an aggressive rollout of 5G technology, supported by nearly 500,000 base stations.

Akhilesh Tuteja, Partner & National Leader – Technology, Media and Telecommunications (TMT), KPMG in India, emphasized the strategic importance of this transition: “Agentic AI is more than a technological advancement—it is a strategic paradigm shift that empowers telecom operators to move from reactive to autonomous systems. This transformation will unlock new levels of operational efficiency, customer personalization, and revenue growth. India’s unparalleled scale, data richness, and innovation ecosystem uniquely position it to lead the global telecom AI revolution, creating models that others will follow.”

The business value derived from agentic AI is substantial. Operators are reporting a reduction in operating expenses (OPEX) by close to 30% through optimized field-force management and workflow automation. Service disruptions have seen a decline of nearly 50% due to faster and smarter network issue resolution. Revenue growth is being achieved through improved customer retention and the accelerated rollout of new products. Additionally, energy efficiency has improved, with a 25-30% reduction in data center power consumption, and customer satisfaction has increased, with a nearly 30% boost in Net Promoter Scores (NPS).

Leading Indian telcos are already implementing agentic AI solutions:

Reliance Jio is deploying ‘JioBrain,’ an AI-driven digital twin platform for advanced network planning and real-time operations, and its AI Cloud democratizes access to enterprise agentic capabilities.

Bharti Airtel has partnered with Nokia for AI integration into its 4G and 5G infrastructure, focusing on network optimization, predictive maintenance, and AI-powered spam detection. Its Nxtra data centers utilize AI agents for energy efficiency.

Vodafone Idea has adopted HCL’s ANA platform for agentic automation, enhancing VoLTE services, network operations, and customer experience.

Despite the rapid progress, challenges persist, including the complexity of integrating AI with legacy IT systems, data quality issues, cybersecurity risks, and a shortage of skilled AI/ML professionals. The report calls for greater collaboration across ecosystems, accelerated upskilling of telecom talent, and the development of robust AI governance frameworks to ensure ethical, secure, and unbiased AI adoption. India’s strong policy support, world-class talent, and pioneering operator initiatives are positioning it as a global reference for agentic and autonomous networks.
