BNY Mellon Advances AI Integration with Eliza Platform Update and Widespread Employee Training

TLDR: BNY Mellon has significantly advanced its artificial intelligence strategy by updating its proprietary Eliza platform and achieving widespread AI training among its employees. The company reports that nearly all its workforce is now onboarded and trained on the Eliza platform, which is designed to enhance client service, streamline operations, and foster innovation. This initiative underscores BNY Mellon’s commitment to an “AI for everyone, everywhere, and everything” philosophy, aiming to leverage AI for productivity and growth while maintaining strong governance.

BNY Mellon, a global financial services company, has made substantial strides in its artificial intelligence (AI) integration, marked by the recent update of its enterprise AI platform, Eliza, and a comprehensive employee training program. The company reports that approximately 99% of its employees are now fully trained and onboarded onto the Eliza platform, reflecting a significant increase in adoption throughout the year. This initiative is a cornerstone of BNY Mellon’s “AI for everyone, everywhere, and everything” strategy, aiming to harness AI’s transformative potential across its operations.

The Eliza platform, named after Eliza Hamilton, wife of BNY founder Alexander Hamilton, is designed to provide foundational, reusable AI capabilities. It offers employees a marketplace of AI solutions, access to approved datasets, and a community for insights into intelligent tools. The platform leverages best-in-class models and vendor tools from various leading providers, enabling BNY Mellon employees, referred to as “builders,” to develop diverse AI-powered solutions. Key considerations for this technology strategy include strategic value, differentiation, flexibility, and efficiency, ensuring Eliza aligns with the company’s data, risk, legal, and compliance standards.

BNY Mellon’s commitment to AI is further evidenced by its substantial investment in AI talent readiness. The company offers over 130 hours of AI learning content tailored to various employee personas, including executive leadership, through its learning management system. In the first five months following the launch of the AI learning program, employees completed over 26,000 hours of AI training. This extensive training has led to a remarkable 175% increase in Eliza’s adoption this year.

The bank has also been a pioneer in deploying advanced AI infrastructure, being the first major bank to utilize an AI Supercomputer (powered by NVIDIA) to accelerate processing capacity. Currently, BNY Mellon has over 115 AI-enabled solutions in production. The company’s unique position in financial markets and its extensive financial data set provide a distinct advantage in developing data-driven decisions and enhancing market resilience.

Looking ahead, BNY Mellon is focused on driving engagement and application, encouraging employees to build their own Eliza agents. The company’s head of AI hub, Sarthak Pattanaik, noted that an upgraded version, Eliza 2.0, was expected to launch in 2025, focusing on more complex reasoning capabilities rather than just providing answers. This upgrade aims to enable the platform to “take a step back, thinking through various options.” Sharyn Jones, BNY’s global head of talent management, emphasized that the objective of Eliza is not to eliminate jobs but to enhance employees’ capabilities and identify opportunities for efficiency, ultimately changing how people perform their day-to-day tasks. CEO Robin Vince highlighted the long-term excitement about AI, stating that the investment is expected to unlock capacity and allow employees to focus on higher-value tasks, with benefits accelerating in 2026 and beyond.
