Silicon Valley’s investment landscape is undergoing a significant transformation, with a notable pivot towards biotech defense startups, driven by escalating concerns over the potential for AI-powered bioweapons. This strategic shift is particularly striking given that 2025 has seen the lowest biotech investment levels in over a decade, according to PitchBook data. However, the rise of artificial intelligence, particularly generative AI, is changing this dynamic, as investors recognize its dual-use potential in both creating and countering biological threats.
At the forefront of this emerging sector is Valthos, a New York-based startup that recently emerged from stealth with a substantial $30 million (₹263 crores) in funding. The investment round was led by prominent entities including OpenAI, Founders Fund, and Lux Capital. Valthos, a nine-person team, is developing advanced AI software designed to detect and defend against biological threats before they can escalate into catastrophic events. The company positions itself at the critical intersection of biotechnology, artificial intelligence, and national security—fields that are converging at a pace that outstrips current regulatory frameworks.
Kathleen McMahon, co-founder and CEO of Valthos, emphasized the urgency of their mission, stating, “The only way to deter an attack is to know when it’s happening and deploy countermeasures fast.” McMahon, who previously led Palantir Technologies’ life sciences division, aims to apply her experience in ‘meeting operators where they are’ to government biosecurity infrastructure. Her co-founder, Tess van Stekelenburg, a venture partner at Lux Capital with a background in neuroscience and biology, has long sought to back a biodefense company. Brandon Reeves, a partner at Lux Capital, echoed this sentiment, asserting, “This should be treated on the same threat level as nuclear or cyber,” and believes Valthos signifies the beginning of a new investment wave in the field.
Valthos’s core platform is designed to aggregate biological data from diverse government and commercial sources, including wastewater and air-quality samples, as well as genomic sequencing data. This vast dataset is then analyzed by AI models to detect anomalies and identify potential emerging threats. Furthermore, the company is developing systems capable of real-time redesign of medical countermeasures, enabling rapid updates to vaccines and therapeutics in response to quickly evolving biological agents.
Delian Asparouhov, a partner at Founders Fund, highlighted the changing perception of biodefense investments. “Pre-2025 there were murmurs, but now it’s really come to the forefront,” he noted, adding that advances in generative AI have expanded both the capacity to create bioweapons and the necessary tools to counteract them. Asparouhov admitted that “Backing Valthos wouldn’t have made sense a few years ago. Now the technology makes it necessary.”
Even OpenAI’s involvement underscores a growing awareness of biotech’s national security implications. Jason Kwon, OpenAI’s Chief Strategy Officer, described Valthos as the company’s “first biosecurity investment,” stressing that protecting large language models from misuse necessitates building a broader ecosystem of countervailing technologies. “There needs to be a system of countervailing technologies to make the system robust,” Kwon stated.
This surge in private investment contrasts sharply with a shrinking government funding landscape for biodefense. Federal budget cuts have reduced public spending on biosecurity projects, even as the threat environment intensifies. Daniel Regan, a senior fellow at the Council on Strategic Risks, warned of the challenges faced by privately funded companies, stating, “It’s hard for companies with private dollars to make it out of the investment valley of death. We need a pathway for these technologies to succeed.”

The National Security Commission on Emerging Biotechnology issued a stark warning earlier this year, predicting a “ChatGPT moment for biotechnology—and if China gets there first, no matter how fast we run, we will never catch up.” This sense of urgency is now propelling both investors and policymakers into a new technological arms race, where AI serves as both a weapon and a shield. For McMahon, the mission is clear yet formidable: “Biosecurity can’t be an afterthought. We have to build systems as if the next threat is already out there.”
