Bezos Earth Fund Commits $30 Million to Advance AI-Powered Climate Solutions

WASHINGTON – The Bezos Earth Fund has announced a significant investment of $30 million, distributed as grants to 15 global teams dedicated to pioneering artificial intelligence (AI) innovations for climate and nature. This funding is a crucial component of the organization’s ambitious $100 million ‘AI for Climate and Nature Grand Challenge’, designed to accelerate the development and deployment of AI-driven solutions to some of the planet’s most pressing environmental issues. The awards were officially revealed on October 23, 2025.

This latest round of grants follows an initial phase where 24 projects each received $50,000 in seed funding. The 15 selected initiatives will now each receive up to $2 million over a two-year period to further develop and scale their innovative AI concepts. The Grand Challenge, initially launched in April 2024, invited proposals from U.S.-based non-profits and academic institutions worldwide.

The funded projects encompass a diverse range of applications, including the use of AI for detecting illegal fishing activities and optimizing the integration of renewable energy sources into existing power grids. Jeff Bezos, the founder of the Earth Fund, articulated the core objective of this endeavor in an earlier announcement from April 2024, stating, ‘Can modern AI help counter climate change and nature loss, and, if so, how? That’s the question we hope to answer.’

Among the notable recipients, a team from Cornell University, which had previously secured four grants in Phase I, will continue their work on AI applications for biodiversity and enhancing grid efficiency. Additionally, The Nature Conservancy received a grant for its efforts in electronic fisheries monitoring.

While the potential benefits of AI in environmental protection are significant, critics have raised concerns regarding AI’s own environmental footprint, particularly the substantial energy consumption associated with data centers. The Bezos Earth Fund has addressed these concerns by prioritizing net-positive applications within its funding guidelines. This $30 million infusion is expected to catalyze breakthroughs, with the broader $100 million challenge unfolding over the coming years, as Bezos emphasized the goal of inventing ‘new ways forward’ in the fight against climate change.
