Behaviour Interactive’s Generative AI Job Postings Spark Community Debate, Company Clarifies Internal Focus

TLDR: Behaviour Interactive, the developer behind Dead by Daylight, has drawn scrutiny from its community after posting job listings seeking candidates with generative AI experience. The company has since clarified that these roles are intended to improve internal workflows and are not for positions directly involved in creating in-game content for Dead by Daylight or any other game.

Montreal, Canada – Behaviour Interactive, the acclaimed studio best known for its popular multiplayer horror game, Dead by Daylight, has recently found itself at the center of a community discussion following the publication of new job listings. These postings, which explicitly seek individuals with expertise in generative AI, have raised concerns among players regarding the potential integration of AI-generated content into their beloved titles.

The job listings in question include a ‘Senior Full-Stack Programmer’ tasked with developing ‘backend and frontend features using generative AI,’ and a ‘Senior Technical Artist’ for an ‘unannounced project.’ The technical artist role specifically looks for someone to ‘bridge the gap between cutting-edge Generative AI technologies and artistic workflows,’ with responsibilities including evaluating, integrating, and prototyping generative AI tools like Stable Diffusion and ComfyUI for tech art workflows such as video, image, and content generation.

The emergence of these roles quickly became a hot-button topic within the gaming community. Many players and industry observers have expressed reservations about the increasing use of generative AI in game development, citing concerns over potential job displacement for human artists and developers, as well as a preference for hand-crafted artistic content over AI-generated assets. The job descriptions, which mention ‘pushing the boundaries of what’s possible with Generative AI and real-time graphics,’ further fueled these anxieties.

In response to the growing apprehension, Behaviour Interactive issued a clarifying statement to PCGamesN. The company affirmed, ‘We have a very firm policy that prevents the inclusion of anything generated by AI in Dead by Daylight or any other game we’re working on, including marketing assets.’ Behaviour Interactive further elaborated on its intentions, stating, ‘Yes, Behaviour is exploring the use of generative AI tools to improve internal workflows; not for anything that ships in our games. Our policy isn’t changing, and these job offerings are not for roles on any game team.’ This statement aims to reassure players that while the studio is investigating AI for efficiency gains, it will not be used to create player-facing content. It was also noted that neither of the controversial job listings explicitly mentioned Dead by Daylight in their descriptions, suggesting a broader, internal application of the technology.
