Bayer’s Dr. Bijoy Sagar Advocates for Responsible AI to Achieve ‘Health for All, Hunger for None’ in Pharma and Agriculture

TLDR: Dr. Bijoy Sagar, Chief Information Technology and Digital Transformation Officer at Bayer, emphasized an ‘AI-first’ strategy for the pharmaceutical and agricultural sectors, driven by the mission of ‘health for all, hunger for none.’ In a recent CAIO Connect podcast, Sagar highlighted the transformative potential of both generative and agentic AI in enhancing productivity and addressing unmet needs, while stressing the critical importance of responsible innovation, ethical design, and regulatory compliance in these data-rich and highly regulated industries.

In a compelling discussion on the CAIO Connect podcast, Dr. Bijoy Sagar, Chief Information Technology and Digital Transformation Officer at Bayer, outlined the company’s ambitious ‘AI-first’ approach to revolutionize the pharmaceutical and agricultural industries. His vision is firmly rooted in Bayer’s overarching mission: ‘health for all, hunger for none.’ Sagar articulated that these two fundamental human needs are the driving force behind his motivation, stating, “I am incredibly motivated by our mission, health for all, hunger for none. If you are any human being on this planet, those are two things you can’t do without. That propels the basic purpose of your life forward.”

Dr. Sagar underscored why pharma and agriculture are uniquely positioned for AI-driven innovation. Both sectors are characterized by a constant need to meet unmet needs and are inherently data-rich, making technology a ‘natural bedfellow’ to their mission. He explained, “to have people live healthy lives, to have them achieve sustenance in the best healthful way… these are two industries which are highly propelled by innovation. You’re meeting unmet needs. So in any areas where the biggest driver is innovation, technology is a natural bedfellow to that mission.” Bayer aims to integrate AI seamlessly into workflows, fostering ‘frictionless integration’ between human interaction and technology.

Sagar differentiated between two key forms of AI: generative AI and agentic AI. He views generative AI as a catalyst for ‘personal productivity,’ fostering bottom-up creativity and innovation within an organization. In contrast, agentic AI is seen as a driver of ‘organizational productivity,’ employing a more structured, top-down approach to align with strategic objectives. These AI agents are designed as outcome-driven systems capable of making autonomous decisions towards specific goals, a concept already being piloted in various applications, including California’s public services.

However, Sagar stressed that this technological advancement must be pursued with a strong emphasis on responsibility and ethics. In tightly regulated industries like pharmaceuticals, balancing innovation with stringent compliance and governance is a non-negotiable challenge. He urged companies to design AI agents responsibly, ensuring they support efficiency without losing sight of ethical objectives. This includes protecting data and carefully considering the ethical implications of using ‘black-box models.’

The discussion also touched upon the evolving landscape of software, moving beyond traditional interfaces to more flexible, autonomous methods. Dr. Sagar highlighted that the transformation extends beyond technology itself, encompassing how companies ‘work, behave, sell, innovate,’ and how employees interact with each other and with AI agents. He concluded, ‘This is not a transformation of technology. It is really a transformation of the company and the people. Technology is a driver to that change.’ The need for diverse talent and a mission-driven approach to attract and grow this talent is also crucial for successful AI transformation.
