TLDR: Experts are urging Bangladesh to rapidly finalize its AI policy, modernize education, and protect local innovation to fully capitalize on the significant economic benefits and job creation potential of artificial intelligence, while mitigating risks of unpreparedness and foreign technology overreliance.
Artificial intelligence (AI) stands poised to revolutionize Bangladesh’s economy, promising substantial boosts in productivity and the creation of new employment opportunities. However, experts caution that realizing this potential hinges on the country’s ability to adopt timely and strategic measures. A recent report from The Financial Express highlights the urgent need for Bangladesh to finalize its draft AI policy, establish clear guidelines and regulations, reform its education system, promote robust research and development, and actively safeguard local innovation against an overreliance on foreign technology.
While immediate large-scale job losses due to AI are not anticipated, Bangladesh and its neighboring countries face a more pressing risk: being ill-equipped to fully harness AI’s capabilities. This unpreparedness stems from existing gaps in skills, infrastructure, and overall digital capacity. Amidst global anxieties regarding automation and its potential impact on employment, experts emphasize that Bangladesh’s primary focus must shift towards readiness. This involves proactively shaping policy frameworks, modernizing educational curricula to align with AI demands, and fostering an environment that protects and nurtures domestic innovation.

These sentiments are echoed in a recent World Bank report titled ‘Jobs, AI, and Trade in South Asia’, which underscores the critical juncture Bangladesh finds itself in. One expert quoted in The Financial Express article stated, “Bangladesh urgently needs to develop three things – policy, strategy, and regulations – for the optimal administration of AI.” The expert further warned, “Proper and timely adoption will be a blessing, but without pragmatic measures, it could easily become a curse.” The misuse of AI, such as its application in online gambling platforms for data manipulation, was cited as a pertinent example of the technology’s potential downsides if not properly managed.
