TLDR: Balfour Beatty is investing £7.2 million in Microsoft Copilot, a generative AI assistant, and partnering with Microsoft to develop AI-powered ‘smart agents’. This initiative aims to streamline workflows, improve on-site processes, and enhance productivity and safety across its construction and infrastructure projects, marking one of the largest AI investments in the UK construction sector.
Balfour Beatty, a leading international infrastructure group, has announced a significant investment of £7.2 million into Microsoft Copilot, a generative AI assistant designed to enhance work tasks through suggestions and automation across Microsoft 365 applications. This substantial commitment is touted by the contractor as one of the largest AI investments of its kind within the UK construction and infrastructure industry.
Microsoft Copilot, integrated into applications such as Outlook, Word, and Excel, leverages generative AI to assist users with writing, summarising, editing text, suggesting emails, automating tasks, and creating data charts based on user instructions. Balfour Beatty has confirmed that the AI-powered assistant will operate securely within the company’s existing compliant and confidential IT structures.
Beyond the Copilot deployment, Balfour Beatty is also forging a strategic partnership with Microsoft to develop bespoke AI-powered ‘smart agents’. These agents are intended to significantly improve critical on-site processes, including quality control, health and safety protocols, and assurance procedures. By utilising data, these smart agents will provide informed suggestions to personnel responsible for on-site decision-making.
The company is currently piloting these smart agents on the A9 project in Scotland. The trial focuses on assisting with early-stage reviews of inspection and test plans, specifically by identifying common issues such as the use of incorrect or outdated templates.
Leo Quinn, Balfour Beatty Group chief executive, commented on the investment, stating, “This investment demonstrates our commitment to harnessing the full potential of digital innovation to drive productivity and support our people. Expanding access to Copilot is the natural next step in our digital transformation, empowering our teams with intuitive, AI-driven tools that streamline workflows, reduce repetitive tasks, and free up time for high-value work.”
