Baidu’s Strategic Embrace of AI Agents to Revolutionize Operational Efficiency

TLDR: Chinese technology leader Baidu is placing a major bet on artificial intelligence agents to significantly boost efficiency and productivity across its diverse operations. This strategic pivot involves deploying AI agents as ‘digital employees’ capable of autonomously performing complex tasks, driven by the rapid evolution of large language models and AI technology.

BEIJING – Chinese technology heavyweight Baidu Inc. is making a profound strategic commitment to artificial intelligence agents, viewing them as the cornerstone for a revolutionary leap in operational efficiency and productivity. This move, highlighted on August 13, 2025, underscores a significant shift in how enterprises are leveraging AI, moving from human-machine collaboration to a more autonomous AI agent model.

Ruan Yu, Vice-President of Baidu, emphasized the unprecedented speed at which large language models are evolving, stating, ‘The accelerated evolution of models is driving AI to shift from the human-machine collaboration model to AI agent form.’ He further noted that this transformation will lead to the emergence of new types of workers, with AI agents participating in all aspects of enterprise operations as ‘digital employees,’ thereby driving revolutionary changes in organizational productivity.

AI agents, which have garnered global attention and experienced explosive growth this year, are defined as systems or programs capable of autonomously performing tasks on behalf of a user or another system. Unlike traditional chatbots, these agents can design their workflow, utilize available tools, and execute complex actions across a multitude of industries, delivering tangible results.

Baidu AI Cloud, the company’s cloud computing unit, has already launched its first batch of AI-powered digital employees. These include specialized roles such as marketing managers, car salespersons, promotion specialists, product managers, course advisers, and recruitment specialists. These digital employees are designed to deeply integrate large language models, digital human technology, and industry expertise, enabling them to understand and undertake complex tasks, integrate directly into specific business processes, and be accountable for results. Baidu plans to create more such digital employees for various positions and expand their application across diverse fields, including education, automobiles, finance, and fast-moving consumer goods.
