The Kingdom of Bahrain is making significant strides in leveraging cutting-edge technology, particularly artificial intelligence (AI) and satellite data, to bolster its disaster preparedness and response mechanisms. This strategic focus is a key component of the Bahrain Space Agency’s (BSA) broader research and development agenda, which prioritizes ‘Environmental Monitoring and Disaster Response’ within its ‘Space Applications’ framework. The aim is to utilize space-based data for real-time monitoring of critical environmental events such as wildfires and hurricanes.
A notable development in this area occurred in June 2025 with the launch of the Bahrain Space Agency’s first specialized AI-powered satellite payload. This innovative payload is designed for advanced cloud detection and identification in satellite imagery. Developed through a collaborative effort with Chinese firm Star Vision and Omani company ‘Oman Lens,’ the project is instrumental in cultivating national expertise in AI algorithm development. The AI algorithms deployed on this satellite are capable of real-time analysis of satellite images, accurately detecting and identifying clouds, estimating their coverage, and seamlessly replacing cloud-obscured areas with data from previous images before transmission to ground stations. This process significantly enhances the efficiency of space systems and improves the quality of extracted data, which is then applied to diverse fields including urban planning, air and water quality monitoring, and maritime vessel identification.
Preceding this, in March 2025, the National Space Science Agency (NSSA) successfully launched the Al Munther satellite, a testament to Bahrain’s growing domestic capabilities in space technology. This satellite is equipped with a medium-resolution remote sensing camera specifically for capturing detailed images of Bahrain and its territorial waters. The imagery supports crucial environmental and agricultural studies, urban development oversight, and coastal surveillance. NSSA engineers have developed sophisticated AI algorithms to enhance image resolution and analyze the collected data prior to its transmission. Al Munther also features an AI-driven image processing system that conducts preliminary data analysis in orbit, optimizing bandwidth usage and reducing the reliance on extensive ground-based data infrastructure.
Further demonstrating Bahrain’s commitment to smart technological integration, an initiative in August 2024 saw the Kingdom’s Survey and Land Registration Bureau (SLRB) utilize Planet’s satellite data combined with AI-enabled change detection technology for advanced smart city planning. This system, a result of collaboration with Aetosky (formerly SkyMap Global), meticulously monitors and categorizes changes in urban development, infrastructure, and vegetation. The data derived from this system provides vital insights for urban planners and policymakers, with biweekly updates that drastically reduce monitoring time and facilitate the identification of new activities on a national scale.
