Autonomous AI Systems Intensify IT Infrastructure Strain, S&P Global Reports

TLDR: A new report from S&P Global, highlighted by CIO Dive, reveals that the widespread adoption of AI agents is significantly exacerbating IT capacity demands and necessitating a critical infrastructure overhaul. These agentic systems consume substantially more resources than traditional chat-based AI, leading to a projected 500% surge in GPU shipments by 2026 and pushing CIOs to plan five years ahead for infrastructure needs amidst rising costs and new security concerns.

The burgeoning enterprise demand for AI agents is placing unprecedented strain on IT infrastructure, according to a recent S&P Global report, as detailed by CIO Dive on November 7, 2025. The report underscores that ‘agentic systems consume significantly more IT capacity than chat-based systems as they break free of human pacing and launch multiple prompts and cascade into other agents.’ This shift is driving a substantial infrastructure overhaul, bringing with it a new set of capacity demands and critical security considerations.

The impact is already evident in hardware projections, with GPU shipment forecasts from leading suppliers increasing by over 500% for the 2025-2026 period compared to initial estimates from 2023. This rapid investment growth is a direct response to most organizations’ intentions to deploy agentic tools, which are designed to initiate actions independently without human prompting.

CIOs are now grappling with an escalating capacity crunch, compelling them to strategize infrastructure needs up to five years in advance. The financial implications are also significant, with both deployment and operational costs on the rise. S&P Global emphasizes that ‘While agentic AI promises significant operational improvements, organizations face a critical infrastructure overhaul to support autonomous systems.’

Beyond raw capacity, the report highlights the necessity for most future infrastructure strategies to accommodate data flows and interactions across hybrid environments. This often entails integrating on-premises and cloud resources, which in turn demands increased networking capacity to manage the movement of models and data. Furthermore, enterprises must cultivate stronger partnerships with key providers to establish trust in these evolving ecosystems.

Several major companies are already navigating this transition. BNY, for instance, reported 117 AI solutions in production by the end of Q3 2025, a 75% increase from the previous quarter. These solutions include AI agents for identifying business leads, writing code, and accelerating client onboarding. Citi also piloted agentic technology for approximately 5,000 colleagues in September, signaling its prominence in the financial sector. Even beverage giant Coca-Cola is assessing its evolution to incorporate ‘AI and agentic tech over the coming years,’ with CEO and Chairman James Quincey noting the company would undergo some restructuring in 2026 to drive growth and productivity.
