Autonomous AI Robots Compete in Historic Football Tournament in Beijing

Beijing, China – In a groundbreaking display of artificial intelligence and robotics, the world’s first fully autonomous AI robot football tournament, the Robo League, concluded on June 28, 2025, in Beijing’s Yizhuang Development Zone. This historic event saw humanoid robots compete in 3-on-3 matches, operating entirely without human control, marking a significant leap in the integration of advanced technology into sports and daily life.

The tournament featured four teams of sophisticated humanoid robots, each fielding three active players and one substitute. Matches consisted of two ten-minute halves, separated by a brief five-minute intermission. The robots demonstrated remarkable capabilities, utilizing optical sensors and cameras to identify teammates, navigate the field, recognize goals, and track opponents. A notable feature was their ability to autonomously recover and stand up after a fall, highlighting the robustness of their design and programming.

The championship title was claimed by the THU Robotics team from Tsinghua University, who triumphed over the Mountain Sea team from China Agricultural University with a final score of 5-3. The Blaze team from Beijing Information Science and Technology University and the Power team from the Future Laboratory, Tsinghua University, shared third place.

Dou Jing, Executive Director of the Organising Committee and Deputy General Manager of Shangyicheng Technology and Culture Group, emphasized the significance of the event, stating, “This is the first fully autonomous AI robot football match in China. It represents a combination of technological innovation and industrial application, as well as an important window for bringing robots into public life and real-world scenarios.”

Bian Yuansong, chairman of Shangyicheng Group, further elaborated on the tournament’s role as a crucial testing ground for frontier technologies. He noted that the Robo League facilitated advancements in areas such as bipedal dynamic balancing and multi-agent collaborative decision-making. Yuansong also expressed confidence that the technologies showcased during the competition would be rapidly translated into real-world applications, benefiting industrial production and everyday life.

This pioneering tournament serves as a vital precursor to the much-anticipated 2025 World Humanoid Robot Sports Games, scheduled to take place in Beijing from August 15 to 17. The upcoming games will expand the scope of robot sports, featuring eleven events modeled after traditional human athletics, including track and field, gymnastics, and synchronized dancing, further pushing the boundaries of what autonomous robots can achieve.
