The Australian Federal Police (AFP) and Monash University are escalating their joint efforts to counter AI-generative crime, a growing challenge in the digital landscape. This intensified collaboration, highlighted in recent reports on November 10, 2025, leverages the expertise of the AI for Law Enforcement and Community Safety (AiLECS) Lab to develop sophisticated tools aimed at disrupting cyber-criminal operations.
The partnership, which has been active since the AiLECS Lab’s establishment in 2019, focuses on applying artificial intelligence and data science for social good, particularly in enhancing law enforcement capabilities. The AFP describes their approach as delivering a ‘dose of digital poison’ to cyber-criminals, indicating a proactive and disruptive strategy against illicit activities facilitated by AI.
The AiLECS Lab, supported by $2.5 million in funding as part of the Monash Data Futures initiative, is at the forefront of this battle. Researchers from Monash University’s Faculty of Information Technology have developed specialized machine learning algorithms designed to identify and classify abhorrent content on seized digital devices, such as mobile phones and computers. Initially, the focus was on child exploitation material, but the scope is expanding to include content related to terrorism, aiming to reduce the psychological distress experienced by investigators.
A key innovation from this collaboration is the ‘Data Airlock’ system, a world-first technology built in partnership with CSIRO’s Data61 and hosted at Monash University. This system allows researchers globally to develop and test machine learning algorithms using real-world, confronting data without direct exposure to the sensitive material itself. This ethical approach ensures that AI development for law enforcement is conducted responsibly while accelerating the process of data review and analysis.
AFP Commissioner Andrew Colvin has previously stated that this initiative ‘will vastly increase the speed and volume at which police can identify and classify child exploitation material and other distressing content.’ He added, ‘In turn, more people will be held accountable for these abhorrent crimes and, just as importantly, we can better safeguard the wellbeing of both AFP officers and the community we are here to serve.’
Professor Jon Whittle, Dean of the Faculty of Information Technology at Monash University, emphasized the collaborative ethos of AiLECS, drawing on expertise beyond computer science and AI, including law and criminology, to achieve community safety worldwide. Professor Margaret Gardner AO, Monash University Vice Chancellor, highlighted the ‘unlimited potential for data science and artificial intelligence to create sustainable, societal and economic impact,’ underscoring the university’s critical role in advancing these technologies for transformative change.
