The luxury car manufacturer has announced the expansion of its AI applications, with more than 100 AI projects currently in various stages of development across its production facilities. According to Gerd Walker, Member of the Board of Management for Production and Logistics, ‘Artificial intelligence is the game changer in our industry. By using it in a targeted way, we are creating a production environment that is not only more efficient and cost-effective but that also meets the highest quality standards and supports people as ideally as possible.’ This strategic focus underscores Audi’s commitment to integrating AI wherever it is feasible and beneficial.
The impact of AI is most pronounced in production, an area with the highest data volume within the company, accumulating hundreds of petabytes of data. Audi is systematically expanding its data organization alongside the introduction of new AI tools. Key areas of focus include AI-supported quality monitoring and generative AI.
‘IRIS’ Label Check: This AI-powered tool is designed to save approximately one minute of production time per vehicle by efficiently checking labels.
‘Weld Splatter Detection’ (WSD): Developed in collaboration with Siemens, this application uses AI to detect weld splatter on vehicle underbodies. Previously, this was a manual inspection task. Starting in summer 2025, a robotic arm will automatically remove the detected weld splatter, enhancing quality, saving time, and improving occupational safety and ergonomics for employees by preventing potential cable breakages caused by metal deposits.
‘Tender Toucan’: This AI tool is utilized in the tendering process to analyze bids. It creates a list of requirements from specifications, identifies relevant sections in bids, and evaluates their fulfillment. Employees using ‘Tender Toucan’ have reported time savings of up to 30 percent. A wider rollout for series production planning of drivetrains and high-voltage batteries is planned for the summer, with further expansion across Audi and the Volkswagen Group.
Audi’s comprehensive approach to AI also involves close cooperation with the Innovation Park Artificial Intelligence (IPAI) in Heilbronn, which is set to become Europe’s largest AI network. Audi will establish its own office at the IPAI campus, further solidifying its commitment to AI innovation.
