AT&T Deploys AI-Powered Geo Modeler for Enhanced Emergency Network Resilience

TLDR: AT&T has launched its Geo Modeler, a new generative AI system designed to dynamically optimize its mobile network and ensure connectivity during emergencies and extreme weather events. The system, now active nationwide, predicts network strain and autonomously adjusts network parameters or recommends equipment deployment to maintain service for customers and first responders.

AT&T has announced the nationwide implementation of its Geo Modeler, an innovative generative artificial intelligence (AI) system aimed at significantly enhancing network reliability and supporting critical communications during emergency situations and extreme weather events. The news was shared in an exclusive announcement to Mashable, with company leaders confirming the system’s immediate effect across the country.

The Geo Modeler leverages AI to proactively predict potential strain on AT&T’s mobile network. This foresight allows the company to take preventative measures, such as adjusting the tilt of radio antennas, boosting power to specific signals, or providing recommendations for the strategic deployment of additional equipment.

Raj Savoor, VP of Network Analytics and Automation at AT&T, emphasized the system’s capabilities: “If we have a disaster, an outage or if cell towers are undergoing maintenance, Geo Modeler in concert with our network automation autonomously compensates to minimize customer impact and maintain connectivity for emergency personnel.”

An early version of the Geo Modeler has already been in use over the past year, proving its effectiveness during real-world incidents, including the deadly flash floods that impacted Central Texas in July.

The system is designed to revolutionize AT&T’s response to unforeseen network challenges. Savoor highlighted this vision, stating, “Imagine utilizing AI to adapt to unexpected changes in our network infrastructure, remotely resolving coverage gaps or other challenges in near real-time. This is now a reality and being delivered by the AT&T Geo Modeler.”

Beyond maintaining customer connectivity, the Geo Modeler will play a crucial role in supporting first responders. It integrates with the AT&T Network Disaster Recovery (NDR) program, which deploys specialized equipment, such as cell towers mounted on trucks, into disaster-stricken areas. The AI system can provide recommendations to optimize the NDR program’s efforts.

Furthermore, the Geo Modeler is a key enabler for emerging technologies. For instance, when first responders use drones for on-the-ground assessment, the system can determine optimal flight paths and elevations while simultaneously optimizing the network to ensure superior signal quality and connectivity.

By simulating radio transmissions in complex geospatial environments using ray tracing and integrating with various internal systems, the Geo Modeler automates network decisions. This allows for dynamic adjustments to network configuration, improving overall performance and managing connectivity nationwide, even as environmental conditions or seasons change.

This advancement represents a significant step towards network autonomy, enabling rapid and efficient self-healing of the network and facilitating near real-time allocation of capacity to where customers need it most. The Geo Modeler stands as a testament to the growing application of AI in tracking, predicting, and responding to the increasing frequency of extreme weather events.
