Atlassian Forges Strategic Partnership with Google Cloud to Propel Enterprise AI and Multi-Cloud Adoption

TLDR: Atlassian has announced a multi-year partnership with Google Cloud, significantly expanding its multi-cloud infrastructure and accelerating its enterprise AI strategy. This collaboration will see Atlassian’s core applications, including Jira, Confluence, and Loom, hosted on Google Cloud in addition to AWS, and will integrate Google’s Gemini models and Vertex AI to enhance Atlassian’s AI-powered tools like Rovo, aiming to boost team productivity and innovation for global enterprises.

Atlassian, a leading provider of team collaboration and productivity software, has unveiled a multi-year strategic partnership with Google Cloud, marking a pivotal step in its enterprise AI and multi-cloud infrastructure initiatives. This collaboration is designed to empower intelligent teamwork globally by enhancing resilience, security, and scalability for Atlassian’s vast customer base.

Under the new agreement, Atlassian’s flagship cloud applications, including Jira, Confluence, and Loom, will now be available on Google Cloud’s infrastructure, complementing their existing presence on Amazon Web Services (AWS). This multi-cloud approach aims to meet the complex demands of large organizations worldwide, offering greater flexibility and robustness. Furthermore, Google Cloud customers will gain the convenience of purchasing Atlassian cloud applications directly through the Google Cloud Marketplace, utilizing their existing spend commitments to streamline procurement processes.

A core focus of this partnership is the acceleration of AI capabilities. Atlassian and Google Cloud will develop deep product integrations, leveraging Google’s advanced Gemini models and Vertex AI. This integration is set to enable customers to build next-generation AI agents with sophisticated capabilities such as complex reasoning, deep thinking, and multimodal inputs (speech, text, images). Atlassian’s AI tool, Rovo, which currently serves 2.3 million active users, is slated for a significant upgrade through this collaboration, promising enhanced AI-driven features and Agent2Agent interoperability, allowing different AI systems to work together seamlessly.

The partnership is expected to deliver substantial productivity gains for enterprises. Teams will be able to perform actions within Jira and Confluence directly from Google Workspace applications like Gmail, Chat, and Docs. Gemini models will also be capable of searching knowledge within Confluence and initiating actions in Jira, significantly accelerating the transition from insight to action. Practical applications include unifying project updates across Google Workspace and Atlassian tools, and automatically generating release notes based on data from various sources.

Mike Cannon-Brookes, Atlassian’s CEO and co-founder, emphasized the strategic importance of this alliance, stating, “Atlassian’s mission has always been to unleash the potential of every team, and this partnership with Google Cloud marks a major leap forward on that journey.” He added, “By combining our leading teamwork platform and AI offering Rovo with Google’s AI and cloud infrastructure, we’re empowering customers to build the next generation of intelligent agents with advanced capabilities like complex reasoning, deep thinking, and multimodal inputs. Together, we’re making it easier for organizations everywhere to collaborate, innovate, and scale.”
