Aston University is significantly bolstering its commitment to artificial intelligence research by launching up to four prestigious AI Fellowships for outstanding postdoctoral researchers. These three-year fixed-term positions, offered at Grade 8 or 9 depending on experience, are designed to attract top talent ready to push the boundaries of AI and build a global reputation in the field. The initiative is a key part of the university’s Aston 2030 Strategy, which aims to foster transformative research with tangible benefits for society, business, and industry.
The fellowships will span various interdisciplinary areas, with researchers working across the university’s Aston Business School, The Sir Peter Rigby Digital Futures Institute, and the School of Computer Science and Digital Technologies. Key research themes include AI applications in healthcare, transport, and the arts. Other critical areas of focus will encompass agentic AI, which emphasizes decision-making over content creation, generative AI, and advanced technologies for detecting misinformation and disinformation, such as deepfakes.
Professor Abdul Hamid Sadka, Director of The Sir Peter Rigby Digital Futures Institute, highlighted the institute’s role in advancing AI. He stated, “The Sir Peter Rigby Digital Futures Institute is pushing the boundaries of advanced AI and generative AI technologies as well as their application within business settings and public sector environments. The new Aston AI Fellows will join a dynamic, interdisciplinary research environment aligned with our Aston 2030 Strategy, contributing to cutting-edge developments in artificial intelligence.”
The university’s strong industry partnerships are also a central component of this initiative. Professor Alexeis Garcia Perez, Director of the Aston-Capgemini Centre of Excellence for Enterprise AI, emphasized the practical application of their research. “Our unique partnership with Capgemini means our research doesn’t stay theoretical. We work directly with enterprise leaders to turn the potential of AI into tangible business value and societal impact,” Professor Perez noted. Fellows within the Aston Business School will specifically focus on high-impact research related to responsible AI adoption, business transformation, governance, and value creation in enterprise settings.
