TLDR: The upcoming ET MSME Awards 2025 will highlight the profound impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) on India’s Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs). AI is rapidly transforming critical areas such as credit access, enabling swift loan approvals based on transaction data, and significantly boosting operational efficiency across various sectors. This technological shift is empowering India’s 66 million-plus MSMEs to compete on a global scale, moving beyond traditional barriers and fostering a new era of growth and excellence.
Artificial intelligence (AI) is poised to fundamentally reshape the landscape for India’s vast Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), a transformation that will be a central theme at the ET MSME Awards 2025. This event aims to showcase how AI is dismantling long-standing barriers, particularly in credit access and operational efficiency, for the nation’s 66 million-plus small businesses.
One of the most dramatic shifts is observed in credit access. AI-enabled credit platforms are revolutionizing how MSMEs secure financing. What once involved months of paperwork and delays can now be completed in mere hours, with loan approvals based on real-time data like point-of-sale (PoS) transactions. Banks, both private and public, are increasingly deploying algorithms that act as virtual relationship managers, automating credit analysis and document checks. Fintech platforms are leveraging PoS card swipe data to offer short-term unsecured loans, disbursed within minutes, significantly cutting down processing times. This has led to remarkable growth; a report by CRIF High Mark indicates that credit to India’s MSME sector surpassed ₹40 lakh crore as of March 2025, marking a 20% year-on-year increase.
Beyond financing, AI’s influence extends to various operational aspects. In June 2024, Meta and NASSCOM launched the ‘AI Enablement for MSMEs’ initiative, underscoring the vast untapped potential of AI in this sector. For instance, MSMEs in the food processing sector can utilize machine learning to optimize flavor profiles based on regional preferences, sales data, and customer feedback, leading to increased sales in targeted markets. Even traditional service businesses are benefiting; a small accounting firm, for example, can use natural language processing to automatically categorize expenses and identify potential tax deductions in client documents.
The financial accessibility of AI solutions is also a key factor. A chemical manufacturer can implement swift, quality inspection AI for less than ₹30,000 monthly, while a logistics company can see route optimization benefits that outweigh the cost within the first month through fuel savings. This demonstrates that AI is not about replacing human judgment but augmenting capabilities, allowing businesses to amplify their strengths with algorithms handling routine decisions faster and more consistently.

While the journey presents obstacles, the overarching narrative is one of technological empowerment. After decades of being technology adopters, Indian small businesses are evolving into intelligent users of sophisticated tools, enabling them to compete not just on cost but on operational excellence driven by emerging technologies. The ET MSME Awards 2025, with IDBI Bank as its banking and lending partner, is currently open for nominations until August 31, 2025, inviting businesses that are at the forefront of this AI-driven transformation.
