Artificial Intelligence Set to Propel India’s Retail Sector to $1.9 Trillion by 2030, Deloitte Report Reveals

India’s retail sector is on the cusp of a significant transformation, with artificial intelligence (AI) poised to be a pivotal force in its expansion. A recent report by Deloitte, titled ‘AI in Retail for the Agentic Era: Aspiration to Action,’ forecasts that the sector, currently valued at approximately $1 trillion, will surge to an estimated $1.9 trillion by 2030. This growth trajectory places AI, including advanced generative AI, at the core of enterprise strategies, moving it from a supplementary tool to a fundamental enabler.

The report underscores that AI is no longer an experimental technology within Indian retail. Instead, it is being deeply embedded to manage various aspects of the customer journey, personalize product offerings, and automate complex supply chain operations. This strategic shift signifies a mature adoption phase where retailers are transitioning from pilot programs and proofs of concept to full-scale integration of AI solutions.

Anand Ramanathan, Partner and Consumer Industry Leader at Deloitte India, emphasized the urgency and potential of this shift, stating, “AI is a catalyst for reimagining retail and the time to lead the re-imagination is now.” This highlights the critical window for Indian retailers to leverage AI for competitive advantage and market leadership.

Several key drivers are accelerating AI adoption in the Indian retail landscape:

Channel-agnostic Shoppers: Modern consumers expect a seamless and integrated shopping experience across both online and offline channels. AI is instrumental in delivering hyper-personalized engagement at every touchpoint, catering to these evolving expectations.

E-commerce Surge: India’s online retail market is projected to reach a staggering ₹27 trillion by 2030. The rapid expansion of quick commerce and social commerce platforms is further fueling the need for and adoption of AI technologies to manage scale and complexity.

Premiumisation Trend: The number of super-rich households in India is expected to multiply fivefold by 2030. This demographic shift is driving increased demand for high-end products and bespoke retail experiences, which AI is uniquely positioned to deliver through advanced personalization.

Urbanization: By 2030, approximately 40% of India’s population is anticipated to reside in urban areas. This demographic shift is reshaping consumption patterns and necessitating innovative retail strategies, many of which are powered by AI.

Gen Z Spending Power: With a projected spending power of $250 billion by 2025, Gen Z consumers are driving a demand for digital-first, AI-led retail experiences, influencing how businesses engage with this crucial demographic.
