Artificial Intelligence Contributes to Significant Tech Job Reductions in July Amid Broader US Layoffs

TLDR: A recent report by Challenger, Gray & Christmas reveals that artificial intelligence played a role in the elimination of over 10,000 jobs in July 2025, contributing to a total of over 89,000 tech job cuts this year. This comes as the U.S. private sector has seen over 806,000 job cuts through July, the highest since 2020, with AI being one of the top five reasons for workforce reductions.

The United States labor market is experiencing a significant downturn, with a new report from outplacement firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas highlighting artificial intelligence as a key factor in recent job losses. In July 2025 alone, the increased adoption of generative AI technologies by private employers directly led to more than 10,000 job eliminations. This contributes to a broader trend where over 27,000 job cuts have been directly linked to AI since 2023, positioning it among the top five reasons for workforce reductions this year.

The technology industry has been particularly hard hit, announcing over 89,000 job cuts through July, marking a 36 percent increase compared to the same period last year. This makes the tech sector the ‘hardest-hit area’ in the current economic climate. Overall, U.S. companies have announced more than 806,000 private-sector job cuts through July 2025, a figure not seen since 2020.

Andrew Challenger, Senior Vice President of Challenger, Gray & Christmas, noted that ‘the industry is being reshaped by the advancement of artificial intelligence and ongoing uncertainty surrounding work visas, which have contributed to workforce reductions.’ Beyond AI, other factors contributing to the widespread layoffs include global trade uncertainty, tariff pressures, and government budget cuts. For instance, over 292,000 positions have been eliminated this year due to cuts linked to the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), an initiative that has impacted non-profits, healthcare, and government sectors.

The impact of AI is also evident in the hiring landscape for younger workers. According to career platform Handshake, job listings for entry-level corporate roles, typically sought by recent college graduates, have declined by 15 percent over the past year. Conversely, the use of ‘AI’ in job descriptions has surged by 400 percent in the last two years, indicating a shift in required skills and roles.

Despite the significant job cuts, employers added only 73,000 jobs in July, falling well short of forecasters’ expectations. This underscores the challenging environment facing the U.S. job market as it grapples with technological advancements and various economic pressures.
