Apple’s Greater China Sales Rebound Amid Intensified AI Development Push

TLDR: Apple has reported a significant rebound in sales performance in Greater China, marking its first growth in the region in two years, primarily driven by strong iPhone and Mac sales. Concurrently, the company is aggressively expanding its artificial intelligence development strategy, aiming to catch up with rivals despite investor concerns over its current AI progress.

Apple has announced a notable resurgence in its sales performance within the Greater China market, achieving its first growth in the region in two years after a period of seven consecutive quarterly declines. For the June quarter (Q3 FY25), the company’s revenue from Greater China climbed by 4% quarter-over-quarter, reaching approximately $15.3 billion to $15.4 billion. This rebound was largely fueled by an acceleration in iPhone sales and substantial growth in Mac computer sales, with the MacBook Air and Mac Mini leading their respective categories in China.

CEO Tim Cook highlighted that the iPhone’s installed base in Greater China reached a record high, and iPhone upgraders in Mainland China also set a new record for the June quarter. Government subsidies for electronics purchases, offering discounts of up to 15%, may have contributed to this increased demand, although analysts suggest these incentives might create temporary spikes rather than sustained growth. Despite this positive sales momentum, Apple’s overall revenue for the quarter stood at $94 billion, a 10% year-over-year increase.

However, the company’s stock performance reflected investor concerns, with shares gaining just over 2% in after-hours trading, significantly trailing the surges seen by AI-focused rivals like Microsoft and Meta. Apple’s stock has declined almost 15% this year, missing out on the broader tech rally.

Simultaneously, Apple is intensifying its commitment to artificial intelligence development. The company has faced criticism for lagging behind competitors such as Google, Microsoft, and Meta in the rapid advancement of AI products. Analysts and investors are keenly seeking clarity on Apple’s AI strategy, with Wedbush analysts noting, ‘AI is the elephant in the room. While Apple is expanding its AI investments internally, the reality is its not moving the needle and patience is wearing thin about investors.’

Tim Cook affirmed that Apple is making ‘good progress’ on its AI initiatives, stating that ‘Apple Intelligence’ is at the heart of its strategy. The company has reportedly reassigned a significant number of personnel to focus on AI and has acquired seven companies this year, though not all are AI specialists. While an enhanced Siri is anticipated, a major upgrade to the voice assistant has been indefinitely delayed, positioning it behind more advanced AI systems like ChatGPT and Gemini. Cook indicated plans to roll out the updated Siri next year. The competitive landscape in China has also intensified, with local brands like Huawei reclaiming market share, posing a challenge to Apple’s traditional dominance.
