Apple Unveils M5 MacBook Pro with Groundbreaking AI Performance and Enhanced Graphics

TLDR: Apple has launched its new MacBook Pro featuring the M5 chip, delivering a significant leap in AI performance, up to 3.5 times faster than the M4. The M5 chip integrates Neural Accelerators into each of its 10 GPU cores and boasts an enhanced 16-core Neural Engine, making it ideal for demanding AI workloads like text-to-image generation and large language models. Despite these substantial internal upgrades, the device maintains its familiar design and a starting price of $1,599.

Apple has officially introduced its latest 14-inch MacBook Pro, powered by the revolutionary M5 chip, marking a pivotal moment for on-device artificial intelligence capabilities. While the exterior design remains consistent with its predecessors, the internal advancements are poised to redefine performance for professionals and AI enthusiasts alike.

The M5 chip is engineered for a dramatic acceleration of AI workloads, featuring a next-generation 10-core GPU with a dedicated Neural Accelerator embedded in each core. This architecture, combined with an enhanced 16-core Neural Engine, enables the new MacBook Pro to achieve up to 3.5 times faster AI performance compared to the M4 chip, and a staggering 6 times faster performance than the M1. For users migrating from older Intel-based MacBooks, the AI performance gains can be as high as 86 times, effectively transforming workflows overnight.

According to Apple Senior VP of Hardware Engineering John Ternus, ‘M5 marks the next big leap in AI for the Mac and delivers a huge boost in graphics performance.’ This ‘next big leap in AI for the Mac’ translates into tangible benefits for users, including dramatically faster text-to-image generation in applications like Draw Things and unprecedented speed for large language models (LLMs) in tools such as LM Studio. Beyond generative AI, the M5 chip also significantly boosts a wide array of professional workflows, including deep learning, data modeling, and AI-driven video enhancement.

Beyond AI, the M5 chip delivers robust overall performance. It offers up to 1.6 times faster graphics performance in pro applications and up to 20 percent faster multithreaded performance compared to the M4, making it ideal for intensive tasks like code compiling and multitasking. The chip also supports a higher memory bandwidth of 153 gigabits per second, and the new MacBook Pro models now come with 16GB of unified memory as a standard configuration. Storage options have been expanded to include up to 4TB SSDs, boasting 2x faster read/write speeds.

Battery life remains a strong suit for Apple’s professional laptops, with the M5 MacBook Pro delivering an impressive up to 24 hours of use. The entry-level 14-inch MacBook Pro with the M5 chip starts at $1,599, maintaining the price point of the previous generation despite the significant performance enhancements. Pre-orders commenced immediately, with shipping beginning on October 22. Apple also confirmed that the M5 chip will power new iPad Pro models and an updated Vision Pro headset, unifying performance across its professional lineup.
