Apple Unveils M5 Chip: A New Era for On-Device AI and Performance

TLDR: Apple has officially announced its M5 chip, built on third-generation 3-nanometer technology, delivering significant advancements in AI and overall performance. The M5 features a 10-core GPU with integrated Neural Accelerators, a powerful 16-core Neural Engine, and a 10-core CPU, offering up to 4x faster AI performance and 45% faster graphics compared to its predecessor. This new chip powers the latest 14-inch MacBook Pro, iPad Pro, and Apple Vision Pro, enhancing on-device AI capabilities and extending battery life.

Cupertino, California – Apple today announced the groundbreaking M5 chip, marking a substantial leap in artificial intelligence capabilities and overall performance across its product lineup. Built using advanced third-generation 3-nanometer technology, the M5 chip is set to redefine on-device computing for the new 14-inch MacBook Pro, iPad Pro, and Apple Vision Pro.

At the heart of the M5 is a next-generation 10-core GPU architecture, which notably includes a Neural Accelerator embedded within each core. This innovative design allows GPU-based AI workloads to run dramatically faster, achieving over 4x the peak GPU compute performance compared to the M4 chip. The GPU also boasts enhanced graphics capabilities, featuring third-generation ray tracing that delivers up to 45% higher graphics performance than its predecessor. This translates to smoother rendering in professional applications and significantly higher frame rates in games.

The M5’s CPU is configured with up to 10 cores, comprising six efficiency cores and up to four performance cores, which Apple touts as the world’s fastest performance core. This configuration delivers up to 15% faster multithreaded performance over the M4. Complementing these advancements is an improved 16-core Neural Engine, a powerful media engine, and a nearly 30% increase in unified memory bandwidth, reaching an impressive 153GB/s. This unified memory architecture is crucial, enabling the entire chip to access a large, single pool of memory, which is vital for running larger AI models entirely on-device.

Johny Srouji, Apple’s senior vice president of Hardware Technologies, stated, “M5 ushers in the next big leap in AI performance for Apple silicon. With the introduction of Neural Accelerators in the GPU, M5 delivers a huge boost to AI workloads.” This focus on AI is evident in the chip’s ability to accelerate AI-powered features by up to 50% for system experiences, such as capturing a Persona on Apple Vision Pro. On-device AI tools like Image Playground will also see faster performance, and the overall efficiency of Apple Intelligence models is enhanced by the faster Neural Engine and increased unified memory. Developers utilizing Apple’s Foundation Models framework will also benefit from these performance gains, with Tensor APIs in Metal 4 offering direct access to the Neural Accelerators.

The M5 chip brings its industry-leading power-efficient performance to the new 14-inch MacBook Pro, iPad Pro, and Apple Vision Pro. For instance, the 14-inch MacBook Pro with M5 claims up to 7.7 times faster AI video-enhancing performance and up to 24 hours of battery life, making it ideal for demanding professional workflows. John Ternus, Apple’s Senior Vice President of Hardware Engineering, commented, “M5 marks the next big leap in AI for the Mac, boosting graphics performance and accelerating workflows for students, creatives, developers, and business professionals alike.”
