TLDR: Apple is reportedly in early discussions with Google to license its Gemini AI to power a significantly revamped version of Siri, potentially launching with the iPhone 17 lineup. This strategic move aims to enhance Siri’s capabilities amidst the escalating AI race, with Google already training a custom Gemini model for Apple’s Private Cloud Compute servers. While no deal is finalized, Apple has also engaged with OpenAI and Anthropic for similar partnerships.
Apple is reportedly exploring a significant shift in its artificial intelligence strategy, engaging in preliminary discussions with Google to integrate its Gemini AI into a next-generation Siri. This potential partnership, first reported by Bloomberg, aims to deliver a more advanced and capable AI assistant, particularly as the launch of the iPhone 17 series approaches in 2025.
The discussions are said to be in their early stages, with Apple reportedly requesting Google to develop a custom AI model specifically for Siri. This model would be designed to run on Apple’s Private Cloud Compute servers, aligning with Apple’s privacy-first architecture. Google has already commenced training such a model in response to these talks.
This move underscores Apple’s urgency to bolster its AI offerings in a rapidly evolving landscape where competitors like Google Assistant, ChatGPT, and Grok are making significant strides. While Apple has been developing its own large language models (LLMs) internally and testing multiple solutions, including its own and third-party models, the company is also considering external partnerships to accelerate its AI advancements. Prior to Google, Apple held discussions with OpenAI and Anthropic regarding similar collaborations, with both companies also working on versions of their models for Apple’s servers. However, reports suggest that Anthropic’s fees prompted Apple to explore other options.
Apple’s software engineering chief, Craig Federighi, earlier this month referred to a ‘second-generation’ Siri architecture, highlighting an ‘end-to-end revamp’ that has yielded results necessary for more advanced AI features, including the personalization promised with Apple Intelligence in iOS 18. Federighi stated, ‘This has put us in a position to not just deliver what we announced, but to deliver a much bigger upgrade than that we envisioned.’
If the partnership with Google Gemini materializes, it is expected to significantly enhance Siri’s conversational abilities, multimodal understanding, and contextual intelligence—areas where Apple’s voice assistant has lagged behind rivals. The integration could lead to a ‘Siri 2.0’ with a potential launch rumored for spring 2026. The mere reports of these discussions have already had a positive impact on the stock market, with Alphabet’s shares rising by 3% and Apple’s by 1%.
