Apple Discontinues Clips Video Editor Amidst Rising AI Competition

TLDR: Apple has officially ceased support for its Clips video editing application, removing it from the App Store on October 10, 2025. The decision, eight years after its launch, is attributed to low user engagement and intense competition from advanced AI-powered video creation tools and popular social media platforms.

Apple Inc. has announced the discontinuation of its Clips video editing app, effective October 10, 2025, after eight years on the market. The app, initially launched for free on the iOS App Store on April 6, 2017, was designed to enable users to create and share short, fun videos with ease, incorporating features like music, text, filters, and augmented reality (AR) effects. It was a popular tool for generating social media-ready content, offering a user-friendly alternative to more complex editing software.

The tech giant’s decision stems from a combination of factors, primarily low user engagement and the rapidly evolving landscape of mobile video creation. In recent years, the market has seen a surge in sophisticated AI-powered video editing tools and robust features integrated directly into social media platforms, which have overshadowed Clips’ offerings. This intense competition has made it challenging for Clips to maintain relevance among users seeking more advanced and automated video creation capabilities.

While Clips was initially compatible with 64-bit devices running iOS 10.3 or later, its last significant update, version 3.1.3, required iOS 16.0 or later. Despite past enhancements, including improved title cards and integration with GarageBand for custom soundtracks, updates to the app had become increasingly infrequent, signaling its eventual phase-out.

For existing users who have already downloaded Clips, the app will continue to function indefinitely on their devices. However, Apple will no longer provide updates or new features, and the app is no longer available for download by new users from the App Store. Apple’s support page advises current users to back up their video creations directly to their Photos library to ensure their content is preserved. This move is seen by some as a strategic pivot for Apple to concentrate its resources on more professional-grade video editing solutions, such as Final Cut Pro, in a highly competitive market.
