TLDR: Apple is reportedly developing a new generative AI application, internally dubbed an “answer engine,” to rival existing chatbots like ChatGPT and Gemini. This initiative, led by a new team called “Answers, Knowledge, and Information,” signifies Apple’s intensified focus on AI as it aims to integrate these capabilities into Siri, Safari, and Spotlight, and potentially launch a standalone AI app.
Cupertino, California – Apple is making significant strides in its artificial intelligence (AI) strategy, with reports indicating the company is actively developing a new generative AI application designed to compete with established platforms such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini. This move marks a pivotal moment in Apple’s “AI comeback” as it seeks to close the gap in the rapidly evolving generative AI landscape.
According to sources including Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple has formed a dedicated in-house team, “Answers, Knowledge, and Information” (AKI), tasked with spearheading this ambitious project. Robby Walker, an Apple veteran who previously led the Siri team, is reportedly at the helm of this new group, reporting directly to Apple’s AI chief, John Giannandrea.
The internal name for this new AI product is an “answer engine,” which is envisioned as a system capable of crawling the web to provide accurate and comprehensive responses to general-knowledge questions. While still in its early stages of development, the company is exploring the possibility of launching this as a standalone application.
Beyond a potential standalone app, Apple plans to deeply integrate these new generative AI capabilities into its core services. Future versions of Siri, Safari, and Spotlight are expected to benefit from this enhanced AI infrastructure, aiming to significantly improve user experience and functionality. This strategic integration is also intended to reduce Apple’s current reliance on external partnerships, such as its existing optional integration of ChatGPT for certain Apple Intelligence features like Image Playground and Smart Writing Tools.
Apple’s intensified focus on AI comes as CEO Tim Cook has reportedly emphasized the critical importance of AI for the company’s future. During an all-hands meeting, Cook is said to have stated that Apple “must do this” and “will make the investment to do it,” likening the AI revolution to the impact of the internet, smartphones, and cloud computing. He also reportedly acknowledged Apple’s historical approach of not being first to market but entering categories with new value.
Despite previously downplaying consumer interest in chatbots at WWDC24 when announcing its partnership with OpenAI, the widespread adoption and utility of generative AI chatbots—with approximately 36% of users now preferring them over traditional search engines—have seemingly prompted Apple’s shift in direction. The company is actively posting numerous job openings related to generative AI, search engines, and large language models (LLMs) in both the United States and China, indicating a robust recruitment drive to accelerate its AI development. However, Apple has also faced challenges, including the loss of several AI experts to rival companies like Meta.
