Antonio Lucio Discusses Evolving Marketing Leadership at Yale SOM Colloquium

TLDR: Antonio Lucio, Chief Marketing and Corporate Affairs Officer at HP, shared insights on the future of marketing leadership at a Yale School of Management colloquium. He emphasized the need for marketers to earn their seat at the business table, focus on fulfillment to drive results, and act as integrators within complex organizations. Lucio also highlighted the impact of generative AI and hybrid work on the evolving landscape of leadership.

Antonio Lucio, a veteran marketing leader with experience at companies like HP, Meta, Visa, and PepsiCo, recently delivered a compelling address at the Yale School of Management’s Colloquium on Marketing Leadership. The event, hosted by the Yale Center for Customer Insights on July 31, 2025, focused on the challenges and opportunities facing rising leaders in an increasingly complex business environment. Lucio’s insights offered a candid perspective on leading with both impact and integrity.

One of the key distinctions Lucio drew was between marketing in consumer goods and marketing in tech or finance. He noted that in traditional consumer packaged goods (CPG) companies, marketing typically oversees the entire spectrum from product to price to promotion. However, in other sectors, the role of a Chief Marketing Officer (CMO) often begins at the periphery. ‘Outside of a consumer good company, the first role of a CMO like myself is to earn the seat at the business table. It’s not granted, it’s not given, and sometimes it’s not even a direct report to the CEO,’ Lucio stated. He stressed the importance of deeply understanding the business and demonstrating the tangible impact of marketing tools, techniques, strategies, and tactics on overall business results.

A central theme of Lucio’s presentation was the concept of fulfillment, both personal and organizational. Citing HP’s global research, which indicates that only 28% of workers feel positively about their relationship with work, Lucio framed this not as a challenge but as a significant opportunity. He believes that connecting growth with fulfillment is crucial for future leadership, especially in a world being reshaped by generative AI, hybrid work, and new expectations of leadership.

Lucio also highlighted the evolving role of marketers as integrators within businesses. At HP, he is actively involved in shifting the company’s focus from selling individual products to delivering comprehensive solutions tailored to customer needs. This necessitates a rethinking of how marketing collaborates with sales, product development, and IT, positioning the brand as a trusted business partner rather than merely a vendor.

In his closing remarks, Lucio urged students to concentrate on sustainable transformation. ‘Don’t just chase the next campaign or short-term metric,’ he advised. Instead, he encouraged them to understand their business thoroughly, build trust, and lead with a clear sense of purpose. His perspective provided a roadmap for navigating marketing’s changing role and offered a powerful reminder of the kind of leadership the next generation should aspire to.
