In a significant leadership development within the artificial intelligence sector, Anthropic, a prominent AI research and safety company, has named Rahul Patil as its new Chief Technology Officer (CTO). The announcement, made on October 4, 2025, marks a strategic shift in the company’s engineering leadership, aiming to bolster its capabilities in critical areas such as compute, infrastructure, and inference.
Patil brings over two decades of extensive experience from top-tier technology and fintech firms. Prior to joining Anthropic, he served as the CTO at Stripe, a leading financial technology company. His impressive career trajectory also includes senior roles at industry giants like Microsoft, Oracle, and Amazon Web Services (AWS), as well as ClearTax.
An alumnus of PES Institute of Technology (PESIT) in Karnataka, India, where he earned his Bachelor of Engineering in Computer Science, Patil furthered his education with a Master’s in Computer Science from Arizona State University and an MBA from the University of Washington.
In his new role at Anthropic, Patil will be directly responsible for overseeing the company’s compute resources, infrastructure development, inference systems, and the broader spectrum of engineering operations. This appointment is part of an internal reorganization, with co-founder Sam McCandlish transitioning from CTO to Chief Architect. McCandlish will now concentrate on pre-training and large-scale model development, ensuring a focused approach to Anthropic’s core AI research. Both Patil and McCandlish will report directly to Anthropic President Daniela Amodei, indicating a streamlined structure for engineering and research divisions.
