Analyst Warns Apple Faces ‘BlackBerry Moment’ Without Aggressive AI Investment

TLDR: A prominent analyst has issued a stark warning that Apple could suffer a fate similar to BlackBerry’s if it fails to urgently and aggressively advance its artificial intelligence strategy, urging immediate and transformative action in the next three to six months.

In a critical assessment of Apple’s strategic direction, Dan Ives, the global head of technology research at Wedbush Securities, has delivered a stern warning: the tech giant risks a ‘BlackBerry moment‘ if it does not make bold and decisive moves in artificial intelligence (AI) within the next three to six months. Ives’s remarks highlight a growing concern among analysts and investors regarding Apple’s perceived lag in the rapidly evolving AI landscape.

According to Ives, while competitors such as OpenAI, Microsoft, Google, Meta, and Amazon are aggressively pushing forward with AI innovation, Apple appears to be ‘sitting on a park bench sipping lemonade,’ rather than actively participating in the race. This sentiment underscores a critical juncture for the Cupertino-based company, despite its formidable platform advantage, boasting 2.4 billion iOS devices and 1.5 billion iPhones in circulation globally. Ives argues that this unparalleled ecosystem could be squandered without a significant AI pivot.

The ‘BlackBerry moment‘ analogy draws a parallel to the once-dominant smartphone maker’s downfall. BlackBerry, despite its profitability and market leadership in the mid-2000s, failed to adapt to the smartphone revolution ushered in by Apple’s iPhone. Its reluctance to pivot from its successful QWERTY keyboard and email-centric model ultimately led to a dramatic loss of market share and a plummeting stock price, from over $140 in May 2008 to approximately $3.65 today. Ives suggests Apple faces a similar existential threat if it doesn’t embrace generative AI.

To avert this fate, Ives has put forth three key recommendations for Apple:

1. Acquisition of Perplexity: He strongly advises Apple to acquire Perplexity, an AI-based search engine startup. Ives believes this acquisition could be the cornerstone for revitalizing Siri, Apple’s voice assistant, and that a potential $30 billion acquisition price is negligible compared to the long-term AI monetization potential.

2. External AI Talent Infusion: Ives urges Apple to bring in leading figures from the AI sector to restructure its executive team. He notes that Apple’s recent product launches have lacked novelty, and a fresh influx of AI expertise is crucial to rejuvenate innovation and leadership.

3. Deep Integration of Google’s Gemini: Despite potential regulatory hurdles, Ives recommends that Apple fully embrace Google’s Gemini AI chatbot, integrating it deeply into the iPhone ecosystem to enhance its AI capabilities.

While Apple CEO Tim Cook has indicated openness to mergers and acquisitions to bolster AI, and the company has reportedly completed seven AI-focused acquisitions this year aimed at privacy-centric AI and Siri upgrades, insiders suggest these efforts are insufficient. The market is increasingly demanding transformative AI integration to unlock Apple’s full potential and secure its legacy in the ongoing technological revolution.
