TLDR: Rob Williams, Vice President of Device Software and Services at Amazon, is set to retire from the company by the end of 2025. His departure follows a 12-year tenure marked by significant product unveilings and strategic efforts to integrate generative AI into Amazon’s device ecosystem, including the Alexa platform and the new Vega operating system.
Rob Williams, a prominent figure in Amazon’s devices division and a member of the elite S-team advising CEO Andy Jassy, has announced his retirement from the company. Williams, who served Amazon for 12 years, will step down from his day-to-day role as Vice President of Device Software and Services immediately, transitioning to an advisory position to Panay and remaining on the S-team until his full departure at the close of 2025. This exit is particularly notable given the rarity of S-team member departures, a group recognized for its direct access to the CEO and its significant influence within the company.
Williams’ departure comes on the heels of Amazon’s annual devices and services showcase, where the company unveiled a new array of products, including enhanced Echo speakers, color Kindle e-readers, and Fire TV sets with improved display quality. Throughout his tenure, Williams played a crucial role in shaping the software and user experiences across nearly all of Amazon’s device offerings.
Despite these product launches, Amazon’s devices division has faced considerable challenges, including recent layoffs and financial pressures. A key strategic focus for the division has been the ambitious effort to revamp the Alexa voice assistant with embedded generative AI technology. Williams was also a vocal proponent of ‘Vega,’ Amazon’s proprietary operating system designed to replace Google’s Android software, which he described as a breakthrough for its potential to offer faster performance at lower costs and redefine Amazon’s smart entertainment experience. He notably stated, ‘No one else has anything like it,’ in a rare LinkedIn post.

In the wake of Williams’ exit, Tapas Roy, formerly the VP of Fire TV product and engineering, will assume Williams’ previous responsibilities as VP of Device Software and Services. As Amazon intensifies its commitment to AI integration and the development of proprietary software, Williams’ retirement marks the conclusion of an impactful chapter in the evolution of Amazon’s devices, leaving a lasting imprint on the Alexa ecosystem, Fire TV innovations, and the future trajectory of in-home AI.
