TLDR: Amazon is set to invest A$20 billion (approximately US$13 billion) over five years, from 2025 to 2029, to significantly expand its data center infrastructure across Australia. This substantial commitment, Amazon’s largest global technology investment in the country, aims to bolster Australia’s artificial intelligence capabilities and meet the surging demand for cloud computing and generative AI workloads. The initiative is expected to create skilled jobs, drive economic growth, and includes investments in renewable energy to power the new facilities.
Amazon has announced a monumental investment of A$20 billion (approximately US$13 billion) over the next five years, from 2025 to 2029, dedicated to expanding, operating, and maintaining its data center infrastructure in Australia. This strategic move represents Amazon’s largest global technology commitment in the country and is poised to significantly enhance Australia’s artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities and support the rapidly growing demand for cloud computing and generative AI workloads.
The investment will be channeled into new server capacity and infrastructure designed to accelerate AI adoption and capability across various sectors. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese lauded the investment, stating, “This is the largest investment our country has seen from a global technology provider, and is an exciting opportunity for Australia to build AI capability using secure, resilient infrastructure.” He added that it will generate economic opportunities for Australians, including skilled jobs and infrastructure capable of supporting complex AI and supercomputing applications.
The initiative aligns with the Australian government’s vision to improve productivity and foster economic growth through AI innovation. The Department of Industry, Science and Resources projects that AI and automation could contribute up to A$600 billion (US$391 billion to US$396 billion) annually to Australia’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) by 2030, underscoring the potential impact of such investments.
Matt Garman, Chief Executive Officer of Amazon Web Services (AWS), emphasized the transformative nature of AI, stating, “AI is a once-in-a-generation transformation, and Amazon is pleased to be empowering all Australians to innovate at scale through this investment.” He further noted that the planned investment deepens AWS’s long-term commitment to supporting the growth and development of Australian organizations and helping them harness the immense opportunities presented by generative AI.

Beyond the core data center expansion, Amazon is also investing in three new solar farms in Victoria and Queensland. These facilities will contribute over 170 megawatts of combined renewable energy capacity, supporting the company’s commitment to sustainability. Once completed, Amazon will operate 11 solar farms across Australia, capable of producing 1.4 million megawatt-hours annually, enough to power approximately 290,000 Australian homes. This expansion follows the launch of AWS AI Spring Australia, a comprehensive program designed to accelerate AI adoption and capability nationwide.
