TLDR: Amazon CEO Andy Jassy has reiterated that the extensive integration of generative AI and AI agents will lead to a decrease in the company’s total corporate workforce in the coming years. This strategic shift aims to achieve significant efficiency gains, impacting roles primarily in software engineering and marketing.
Amazon CEO Andy Jassy has doubled down on his prediction that artificial intelligence will lead to a reduction in the company’s corporate workforce. In a recent company-wide memo to Amazon’s 1.5 million employees, Jassy emphasized that the widespread adoption of generative AI and AI agents is set to transform how work is done, ultimately requiring fewer people for certain existing roles.
During a recent interview, Jassy stated, ‘We will need fewer people doing some of the jobs that the technology actually starts to automate.’ He further elaborated in his June 17 internal memo, ‘We will need fewer people doing some of the jobs that are being done today, and more people doing other types of jobs.’ The Amazon chief anticipates that this will ‘reduce our total corporate workforce as we get efficiency gains from using AI extensively across the company’s operations over the next few years.’ The transformation is specifically targeting corporate employees in areas such as software engineering, marketing, and other white-collar positions.
Amazon has been aggressively investing in AI, with Jassy revealing that the company currently operates over 1,000 generative AI services and applications, with many more in progress. He highlighted that an AI coding assistant previously saved Amazon programmers an equivalent of 4,500 years of work by accelerating software upgrades. AI agents are now handling tasks like coding, analytics, and research that were traditionally performed by human workers.
While Jassy suggests that AI will free employees from ‘rote work’ and ‘make all our jobs more interesting,’ allowing staff to focus on innovation and higher-value tasks, internal employee reactions have been mixed. One employee reportedly expressed sarcasm on company Slack channels, writing, ‘There is nothing more motivating on a Tuesday than reading that your job will be replaced by AI in a few years.’
This announcement follows a series of significant workforce reductions at Amazon, with over 27,000 jobs cut since 2022 through rolling layoffs, primarily in its devices, services, and books teams. Additional workforce reductions have continued into 2025 across its retail and devices divisions.
Jassy also encouraged employees to embrace the change, urging them to ‘Be curious about AI, educate yourself, attend workshops and take trainings, use and experiment with AI whenever you can.’ He believes that those who become conversant in AI will be well-positioned to have a high impact and help reinvent the company.

Amazon is not alone in this trend. Other tech giants are also adjusting their workforces due to AI integration. Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff recently noted that AI is now performing 30 to 50 percent of the work at his company, while Shopify and Microsoft are encouraging employees to integrate AI into their daily routines. Online lender Klarna has also reduced its team size by approximately 40 percent, partly attributed to AI adoption.
