TLDR: Amazon is set to cut approximately 14,000 corporate jobs, representing about 4% of its corporate workforce, as the company intensifies its focus and investment in artificial intelligence. This strategic move aims to streamline operations, reduce bureaucracy, and reallocate resources towards AI development, with CEO Andy Jassy having previously indicated that generative AI would lead to a smaller corporate workforce.
Amazon has announced a significant reduction of approximately 14,000 corporate positions, a move directly linked to the company’s accelerating investment in artificial intelligence (AI) and a broader strategy to enhance efficiency and reduce operational costs. This latest round of layoffs, which impacts about 4% of Amazon’s estimated 350,000 corporate employees, follows previous substantial job cuts in 2023, which saw 27,000 roles eliminated.
According to Beth Galetti, Senior Vice President of People Experience and Technology at Amazon, these reductions are part of an effort to help the company ‘operate like the world’s largest startup,’ emphasizing AI as the most transformative technology since the internet. CEO Andy Jassy had foreshadowed such changes in June, stating his expectation that generative AI capabilities would lead to a decrease in Amazon’s corporate workforce in the coming years. Jassy also revealed that Amazon had over 1,000 generative AI services and applications either in progress or already built, a figure he described as a ‘small fraction’ of the company’s long-term AI ambitions.
The strategic shift is underscored by Amazon’s substantial financial commitments to AI infrastructure. The company plans to invest $10 billion in establishing a new AI innovation campus in North Carolina. Furthermore, since the beginning of 2024, Amazon has allocated approximately $10 billion to data center projects in Mississippi, Indiana, Ohio, and North Carolina, all aimed at bolstering its cloud computing and artificial intelligence capabilities. These investments highlight Amazon’s intent to compete vigorously with other tech giants like OpenAI, Google, Microsoft, and Meta in the rapidly evolving AI landscape.
