TLDR: Amazon has announced its acquisition of Bee, a San Francisco-based artificial intelligence company renowned for its wearable listening device. This strategic move aims to significantly expand Amazon’s footprint in the personal AI and wearable technology sectors, integrating Bee’s innovative technology into its broader AI ecosystem.
Amazon is making a significant stride into the future of personal computing with its acquisition of Bee, a San Francisco-based startup specializing in wearable artificial intelligence. The deal, confirmed by Bee CEO and co-founder Maria de Lourdes Zollo via LinkedIn, underscores Amazon’s commitment to integrating advanced AI into daily life through consumer hardware.
Bee’s flagship product is a compact, $49.99 wearable device, available as a wristband or clip-on, designed to record and transcribe conversations. Beyond simple transcription, the device leverages sophisticated AI to summarize interactions, track tasks, and provide timely reminders and insights. This functionality aligns with Bee’s vision of a truly personal AI that learns and enhances a user’s life by understanding their relationships, emotions, and aspirations.
The financial terms of the acquisition have not been disclosed by either company. However, it has been confirmed that Bee employees have received offers to join Amazon, suggesting a full integration of the startup’s talent and technology. Bee, founded in 2022, had previously secured $7 million in seed funding from notable investors including Exor, Greycroft, New Wave VC, and Banana Capital. The company’s leadership, Maria de Lourdes Zollo and CTO/co-founder Ethan Sutin, bring prior experience from Twitter and Squad.
This acquisition is a clear indicator of Amazon’s aggressive expansion in the artificial intelligence domain. It complements the company’s existing AI portfolio, which includes the Alexa voice assistant, Nova models, and the Bedrock marketplace. By acquiring Bee, Amazon aims to merge AI, the Internet of Things (IoT), and consumer hardware, potentially redefining how individuals interact with technology.
The wearable AI market is experiencing rapid growth, projected to swell from $1.93 billion in 2024 to $8.26 billion by 2030, at a compound annual growth rate of 27.3%. Amazon’s entry with Bee’s affordable $49.99 device positions it competitively against rivals like Meta’s Ray-Ban Smart Glasses and OpenAI’s acquisition of Jony Ive’s io. Amazon emphasizes a privacy-first approach, stating that Bee’s design does not store audio recordings and adheres to high security standards. An Amazon spokesperson affirmed, ‘We design our products to protect our customers’ privacy and security and to make it easy for them to be in control of their experience — and this approach would of course apply to Bee.’

This move follows Amazon’s previous ventures into wearables, such as the Halo health trackers, which were discontinued in 2023. However, the strategic focus on AI-driven personal assistance through Bee marks a renewed and more targeted effort to capture a significant share of the evolving wearable technology landscape.
