TLDR: Alation has launched its Agentic Platform, a significant advancement in data intelligence that leverages AI agents to automate data discovery, governance, and compliance. This new platform, including an AI Agent SDK, aims to streamline complex data management processes and accelerate AI, business intelligence, and regulatory initiatives for enterprises.
Alation Inc., a leading data intelligence company, has announced the launch of its Agentic Platform, marking a pivotal moment in the evolution of data cataloging for the artificial intelligence era. Unveiled on March 3, 2025, this platform introduces sophisticated AI agents designed to automate and guide critical data functions, including discovery, governance, and compliance management.
The Agentic Platform directly addresses the escalating complexities of modern data management. As data volumes surge and regulatory requirements intensify, organizations face significant challenges in manually cataloging assets, ensuring data quality, and maintaining compliance. Satyen Sangani, co-founder and CEO at Alation, articulated this challenge, stating, “The amount of data has only increased. The value that you can get from data has only increased. The rate of change in technology has only increased. And so, the opportunity is there, but the complexity is literally growing faster than the opportunity, or at least just as fast.” He added, “We’ve been fighting this war with arrows, when we sort of need a machine gun…we need something that’s much more powerful in order to be able to fight the battle.”
The platform’s core innovation lies in its AI agents, which transform time-consuming, manual data management into automated, efficient workflows. Initial agentic capabilities include:
Documentation Agent: This agent automatically ingests, organizes, and connects content to relevant data assets, significantly enriching data understanding and the impact of documentation.
Data Quality (DQ) Agent: Leveraging Alation’s knowledge base, this agent automatically creates and applies data quality rules, ensuring that business analysts, reporting dashboards, and large language model (LLM) training datasets contain accurate and timely information.
AI Agent SDK: This Software Development Kit empowers enterprises to build their own custom AI agents, underpinned by Alation’s robust search and discovery capabilities. It supports Anthropic’s Model Context Protocol (MCP), allowing partners and customers to develop applications that leverage the Alation Platform’s data intelligence.
Doug Henschen, an analyst at Constellation Research, highlighted the significance of this move: “Alation is taking a big step forward, both in maturing the use of AI within its platform to realize a future with autonomous agents and also to expose these capabilities to developers seeking to build AI-driven and agentic applications through an industry-standard API.” David Bond of Alation further emphasized, “Agentic architectures are the future of AI, and the Alation Agentic Platform has been designed to revolutionize data cataloging for AI by automating data discovery, governance and compliance management with agents.”
Unlike traditional AI assistants or chatbots that primarily respond to queries, Alation’s agents are designed to act autonomously or semi-autonomously, surfacing insights, making suggestions, and even undertaking repetitive tasks. This positions Alation at the forefront of innovation in the data intelligence market, as competitors like Informatica have primarily focused on assistants and chatbots rather than full agentic capabilities.

The Agentic Platform is currently in beta testing, with general availability anticipated in the second quarter of 2025. Alation’s roadmap for 2025 includes the addition of more agents, further expanding the platform’s ability to automate critical tasks and enhance data worker efficiency. This continued focus on agentic AI is expected to drive further innovation in the competitive data management landscape.
