AiR Hub Spearheads AI Ethics and Benchmarking in the iGaming Sector

TLDR: Kasra Ghaharian and Simo Dragicevic have unveiled AiR Hub, a new research initiative dedicated to advancing AI ethics, governance, and responsible implementation within the iGaming industry. The hub aims to establish crucial benchmarks for AI algorithms, particularly in areas like responsible gambling, and will produce an annual ‘State of AI in Gaming’ report.

In a recent NEXT.io podcast, Kasra Ghaharian, Director of Research at IGI, and Simo Dragicevic, a key researcher at AiR Hub, provided an in-depth look into AiR Hub, a pioneering initiative set to revolutionize the application of Artificial Intelligence in the iGaming sector. The discussion highlighted the critical need for trust, transparency, and standardized benchmarking in the rapidly evolving landscape of AI within gaming.

AiR Hub is positioned as a dedicated research hub with a primary focus on AI ethics and governance in iGaming. Its inception stems from the shared interests of Ghaharian, whose PhD research at UNLV in 2019 centered on AI and machine learning for responsible gambling, and Dragicevic, known for his work with Bet Buddy and independent research in the field. Their collaboration aims to fill a crucial void by establishing a central knowledge hub and thought leader for AI in gaming.

The initiative has outlined several flagship projects for the coming years. A key undertaking is the annual ‘State of AI in Gaming’ report. This comprehensive, multi-disciplinary report is envisioned to be akin to those produced by leading consultancies like McKinsey or KPMG, offering a detailed overview of AI use cases, innovations, and bleeding-edge developments across the industry. Crucially, it will also incorporate a strong focus on sustainability and transparency in AI applications.

Another significant area of focus for AiR Hub is consumer protection and regulation. The hub will delve into the ethical and transparent adoption of AI within the industry, aiming to develop robust frameworks. A particularly vital project involves creating standardized benchmarks for AI algorithms and solutions, especially for tools used in responsible gambling and potentially sports integrity. This mirrors the benchmarking practices seen with large language models (LLMs), where performance is assessed across various tasks like mathematics, comprehension, and science.

According to Ghaharian and Dragicevic, AI holds immense potential for the iGaming industry, from enhancing operational efficiency and augmenting the workforce to driving innovations in generative AI. Furthermore, AI can play a pivotal role in understanding player behavior more deeply and in combating illicit black-market operators. The long-term goals for AiR Hub include fostering spin-out ventures, becoming the definitive resource for AI in iGaming, and developing essential guardrails for the deployment of large language models within the sector.
