AICTE and OpenAI Collaborate to Provide 150,000 Free ChatGPT Go Licenses to Indian Educational Institutions

TLDR: The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has partnered with OpenAI to distribute 150,000 free ChatGPT Go licenses for six months to students and faculty in its affiliated public institutions. This initiative, part of OpenAI’s broader ‘India-first’ Learning Accelerator program, aims to enhance digital skills, improve employability, and promote the practical application of artificial intelligence across the country. OpenAI plans to distribute a total of half a million licenses across various educational sectors in India.

The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has announced a significant partnership with OpenAI, a leading artificial intelligence research and deployment company, to equip students and faculty with advanced AI tools. Under this collaboration, AICTE will distribute 150,000 free ChatGPT Go licenses for a period of six months to its affiliated public institutions across India. The primary objective of this initiative is to bolster digital skills, enhance employability, and foster the practical application of artificial intelligence among the future workforce.

This partnership is a key component of OpenAI’s ambitious ‘India-first’ Learning Accelerator program, which seeks to integrate advanced AI into India’s education system through research, training, and widespread deployment. OpenAI has committed to distributing approximately half a million (500,000) ChatGPT licenses and comprehensive training to educators and students nationwide over the next six months. Beyond AICTE, these efforts extend to partnerships with the Ministry of Education (MoE) to provide ChatGPT access to government school teachers (Classes 1–12) and with Arise member schools for K–12 educators, facilitating personalized teaching and improved learning outcomes.

Highlighting the strategic importance of this collaboration, TG Sitharam, Chairman of AICTE, stated, “AI is not just transforming technology, it’s redefining how we shape the future of our technical workforce. At AICTE, we are integrating AI across disciplines and focusing on hands-on, industry-relevant training for both students and faculty.” He further added, “OpenAI, a progressive leader in the field of Artificial Intelligence, is driving innovation through its state-of-the-art tools and high-end computing capabilities, making AI education more accessible than ever. Leveraging such advanced tools will enable us to accelerate innovation, enhance learning experiences, and build a future-ready technical ecosystem.”

OpenAI’s commitment to India’s educational landscape is further underscored by a substantial research grant of $500,000 (approximately ₹4.41 crore to ₹4.5 crore) to IIT Madras. This funding will support long-term studies on how AI can improve learning outcomes, drive innovation in teaching methods, and align with insights from cognitive neuroscience. The findings from this research are intended to be openly shared to inform both education policy and future product development.
