Cohere, a prominent Canadian artificial intelligence unicorn, has officially announced a substantial new financing round, securing US$500 million (approximately RMB 3.6 billion) in fresh capital. This latest investment propels the company’s valuation from US$5.5 billion (RMB 35.9 billion) to an impressive US$6.8 billion (RMB 48.8 billion). The funding round was led by venture capital firms Radical Ventures and Inovia Capital, with notable participation from industry heavyweights such as AMD, Nvidia, and Salesforce.
Founded in 2019 by Aidan Gomez, a co-author of the groundbreaking Transformer paper, Cohere has rapidly established itself in the AI landscape. The company specializes in developing and providing AI applications designed for private deployment, aiming to solve practical problems for enterprises across various vertical scenarios. Since its inception, Cohere has amassed a total of approximately US$1.1 billion (RMB 7.9 billion) in funding.
Beyond the financial injection, Cohere also announced strategic additions to its leadership team. Joelle Pineau, formerly the vice president of Meta’s fundamental AI research, has joined as Chief AI Officer, tasked with advancing Cohere’s cutting-edge research and product development. Additionally, Francois Chadwick, a former Uber executive, has been appointed Chief Financial Officer, overseeing the company’s financial and business operations.
This latest financing follows a US$500 million Series D round in July 2024, which had previously set its valuation at US$5.5 billion. Cohere’s investor roster has consistently included prominent figures and entities in the AI and tech sectors, such as AI star scientist Fei-Fei Li, Geoffrey Hinton (one of the ‘Three Giants of Deep Learning’), Pieter Abbeel, Oracle, and the aforementioned Nvidia, AMD, and Salesforce.
